In the fir st 250cc Pro mo to, Mike Chamber lai n leapt off the lin e and grabbed the holesh ot. Dam o n Hu ffma n was h ot o n Chamb erl a in 's fender, foll owed by Bill y j oe Mercier, Kehoe, Billy Frank and T ommy Clow ers. Mercier bobbled in the stadium rockers, and dropped back to sixth, wh ich ga ve Kehoe a clear sho t at Huffman , Ch amberlain, meanwh ile, was riding flawl essly, trying to mak e the mos t of his holeshot . On the next lap , Keh oe caug h t Huffman in th e whoops, and quick ly caugh t Chamberlain. O n the third lap, Kehoe pull ed even with Cham berlain, and outjumped the Yamah a pilot. Kehoe's lead was short-lived , as Chamberlain passed Kehoe ba ck aft er the rocker section, Behind th e leading duo, Fra nk bounced past Huffman at the sam e time. The two-rider battle for the lead su ddenl y turned into a th ree-rider battle. In the back section , Clowers al so caught and passed H u ffman, On the next lap , and in the same section in which most of the race action occu rr ed, Keh oe made the decisive move which finally gave him the lead. After the rocker section, Kehoe stopped Ch am berlain wit h a block pass that gave hi m th e lead, Frank followed su it taki ng an o utside line around Cha mberl a in goi ng i nto the mi d -fi eld do ubl e. O ne lap later, Clowers passed Chamber lai n for the third position. Kehoe and Frank quickly distanced them selves from the rest of the pa ck. Th e fin is h in g or de r found Kehoe tak ing th e moto win , follo wed by Fr ank, Cl ower s , H u ffm a n a n d Chamberl ain. The second moto had Kehoe written all over it. Kehoe grabbed th e ho leshot, ahead of Frank, H u ffman, Ch amberlain and Clowers. Clowers bo unced around Chamberlain on th e second P 28 o m Ca rson captured a pair of class titl es at the inau gural Sen ior /Vet Eas te r n Nat ional Motocros s Cha mpionships, presented by FMF, Dirt Bike and Yo koham a, at Pennsylvan ia's H igh Point Raceway. T he 30yea r-o ld Ka wasaki ride r, rid in g a Gear/Pro -Acl ion / EBC /Pro-Circuit/ Smi th / Be ll / Mar k Ko ppel-ba ck ed Kawasaki KX500, won the Pro class and th e Seni or (+25) Expert race with a Iour-rnoto sweep . The event , wh ich drew 250 ad ult racers, incl uded 14 motocross classes for riders 25 years of age and older, plus seven su pport classes for you nge r ent h usiasts. Also, a lat e-aft ernoon, o ne-ho ur hare scra m bles race was held with ATK-mounted Ron Pal erm o earning the overa ll win , " T his is the first tim e that I ever rode a vet race," admitted Carson , a journeyman pro competi tor from H opeda le, Ohio. " I was set to ride the Montreal supercross but th ey cancelled it when the roo f fell apart. I ju mped back in my van and drove all ni ght to get here, and it turns o u t it was well wort h it:' Ca rson earned $500 in cash fo r hi s efforts, plus conti nge ncy awa rds from several of the more than two dozen event spo nso rs. In the first 20 minute Pro moto Carso n roared into the early lead o n his Kaw asak i KX500 and never looked back, event ua lly winning by mor e than 10 seconds, He was cha lle nged earl y by BT Racing's T im Coombs, j eff Prov an ce and Mark Garrison. Howeve r, with temperatures hov ering around 90 degr ees, each of th e tri o faded in the late stages. Davey Coombs, riding a Suzuki RM 125, was able to work hi s way into second at the finish after a poor sta rt. Gary Semics and Warren Reid a lso su ffered from poor jumps off the uphi ll starting area and co u ld o nly muster fo ur th and ninth p lace fini shes, respectively. Carson aga in bla sted into th e.earl y lead in ra ce two, but this tim e Semics got a n eq ual jum p fro m th e gate. For th e first few laps th e d uo kep t a sa fe dista nce from th e rest of the pack, Save for a bri ef surge into seco nd by Davey Coom bs, Carson and Semics settled in for a cru ise to th e checkered £lag wh ere Carson scored the wi n. Coom bs p laced third a nd edged Semi cs out for seco nd overal l. Reid agai n had tro uble keep in g up wi th th e mor e powerf u l 250 and O pen mach in es and fin ished 13th. Carson's win in the Plus 30 A class was ano ther I- I ru naway . Garrison was second overall whi le New Yor k' s Skip Kopow ski p laced third. Bart Lu cas captured the Pl us 35 A class victory wi th a pair o f mo to wins. He was cha sed to the fin ish in both motos by Kopo wski and cross count ry racin g stan dout Rick Kresic. Ma rk H am il to n d ueled through bo th Plus 35 B class motos with A.C. Bru ce, T he two riders tied wi th a wi n and a second apiece but Hamil ton go t th e nod for hi s better second -mote fin ish. (;llI la p, while Fr an k bo bbled i n th e midsecti on of the trac k and dropped back to fifth. T ryin g to mak e up for lost time, Frank cras hed in the stadi um rocker sectio n. Kehoe scored th e win , with Huffman, Clowers, Chamberlai n and Gordon Ward ro unding o u t the top five. Dual mo to wins gave Keh oe the overall win, while H uffman 's 42 scores earned him second overall. Clowers and Chamberlain fin ishe d third and fourth overa ll, respecti vely. Kehoe was again the big money winner in th e 125cc Pro cla ss. In th e first rnoto, Kehoe pulled th e holesh o t a head o f . Bubba . Eri ckson, Sh an e Trittl er, Merci er a n d H uff man . T ritt ler sq ueezed pas t Erickson on th e second lap, while Clowers, wor king up from a medi ocre start , moved past Huffman for th e fifth pos itio n . Clow ers' mom entum carried h im past Trittler to take over th e second pos iti on. Kehoe , how ever , wa s gon e. Clowers cou ld not catc h Kehoe, and Trittl er dropped to 10th on th e fifth lap, Kehoe took th e moto win ahea d of Clo wers, Huffman , Erickson and Mercier. Huffman grabbed the lead in the seco nd rnoto , with Clowers, Kehoe, Trittler and j ohnRay in hot pursuit. Kehoe bega n kn ocking o n Clowers' back door on th e th ird lap. Kehoe tri ed to sail past Clowers over the fini sh line tab leto p ju mp, but the bone crunch ing land ing fell short. Kehoe swit ched to a more traditio na l method of pa ssing, and ducked to the inside of Clowers afte r the rocker section . Keh oe then set o ut for Huffman, who had so far been unco ntested. Kehoe caugh t H uffman with two laps remain ing , and when the two riders appeared from the back sectio n of th e track, it was a drag race to the fini sh , wit h Huffman barely holdin g off Keh oe for the moto win. Kehoe took the overall, wit h Huffman clai mi ng th e runner-u p po sition and Clowe rs, Erickson and Ray Cr um b roundi ng out the top five. Oscar Ancheta ran awa y wit h the 125cc junio r d ivisio n o ne honors sco ri ng ba ck -t o- ba r k m oto win s, Ancheta led the way around the first turn, with Shane Scarpiel lo, Ang elo Ingrande, Aaron Wasn ea and Chri s Finley givi ng chase. Scarp iello bega n pressuring Ancheta for th e lead , but Ingrande slipped by Scarpie llo on th e second lap. On th e fo urt h lap, Scarpiello planted hi mself in th e ground and dropped back to 18th. Mike Van Noo rdt moved into the third po siti on, and the rnoto ended with Anch eta taki ng th e win ah ead of Ingrande, Richard Stephens and Van Noordt. T he second rnoto wa s a runaway victory for Anch eta , wh o pulled the holesh ot and never looked back. The on ly pos itio n left to be argued over was the ru nner-up pos itio n. After the first tum, Corie Flickinger held the second spot, but o n the second lap, Stephen s displaced Fli ckinger. In grande chased Stephe ns arou nd the track until th e last lap , when he bo unced pa st him in the rocker sectio n for second.
