VOICES Letters to the editor King Kenny's record Now that Scott Parker has broken J a y Springs tee n 's a ll -time Gra n d National Championshi p win record, I'd like to kn ow how long it took the previous record holder, Kenny Roberts to set the record. I see i t took J ay fro m June 4, 1975 to Septem ber 8, 1985 10 years and three months, and Scott fro m July 29, 1979 to August 25, 199 1 - 12 years and one month , I think Roberts did it in a lo t less time. Ga ry Lozano Stockton, CA Roberts won his first Grand Nat ional Championsh ip race on January 29, 1972, and broke the record of 28 held by Bart Mark el when he w on his 29th n August 3, 1980. It took Roberts " ht years and seven months to break ig arkel's record . Sp ringsteen broke oberts' record of 33 wins on Ma y 7, 983, seven years an d 10 m on ths after e had scored his first win. You're onjusing the time it took Springsteen o set the mark that Parker broke, 'ns tead of the time it took him to break he previous record. So, chalk one up or Springer, and keep in m ind that II of Markel, Springsteen and Parker 's ictories came in dirt track events wh ile . oberts scored in both dirt track even ts 15 win s) and in road races (1 8 ins) . . .
