Giving no sig n that he was bothered by either the ankle or shoulder injuries suffered in separa te 125cc Na tio na l meets, Brown p ulled fou r hol esho ts a nd led all four A-class motos from start to finish . " Bo th my ank le and shou lder are a li ttle weak ," ad mitted Brown. " But 1 had th em taped, so the o nly way they wou ld reall y bot her me is if I wen t down or got bumped. " Which of course d idn't happen , as the clo sest a nyone go t to Bro wn was on th e sta rling line. Action in the 125cc B class was a little bit closer as Wes Cave jumped into the lead ear ly in mo to one, although Stevy Hyatt passed him and stayed out fro nt for the rest o f the race despite strong cha lle nges from Ca ve. Ch ad Pi tt finished thi rd af ter holdi n~ off Tim Hodock 's ag gres sive moves, while Patrick G reer ro unded out the top five. Seco nd~ mo to ac tio n saw Ca ve at th e fro n t o nce more, and again H yatt was gnawing at hi s knobbies. T his time Ca ve blocked H yat t' s pass a ttem p ts and wa s further ai ded whe n Pitt a nd Mike Nu tter put H yatt bac k to fourth. Cave was n 't ou t o f dan ger , how ever , as Pitt made a last-ditch effo rt down the front straigh t to snat ch th e lead and win away fro m Cave. Greer a lso co m peted in the Schoolboy class wh ere he vaulted into the lead of the fir st mot o. Ha lfway through the race, Connecticut's Carter Gurnee, who ma de the sto p at Pro Sport o n his way home from th e AMA Nat ional Amateur MX Championshi ps in T en nessee, passed Greer for the lead. Greer chased down hi s ' challenger, bu t G urnee held him o ff to finish firs t, wh ile Tres Bru ce crossed th e line th ird behind Greer. G urnee was on th e road ho me befor e the star l. of the second ma LO, whic h saw G reg Nelson jump in to th e lead. As Castro a ttem p ted to- hold off La rsen , Werner was making good use of th e situa tion to move away a safe distance on hi s way to th e checkered flag . Larsen in ch ed past Castro to claim seco nd place by less than half a bike len g th. While it was th e second through fifth p lace fin ishers pro vid in g th e raci ng ac tio n, it was Up to n who scored the first rn or o la u rels by 15 seconds. . In th e 50cc class, Shinn claimed the short tra ck win by lead ing from sta rt to finis h . The real race was for seco nd as Ken Robison and Chris Pizer du eled ba ck and forth with Robi nson edging Pizer at th e fini sh. T he O pen Expert short tra ck saw Joh n n y j o hnson lau nch off th e sta rt with th e lead with Mark Young and Michael Eadi e in hot pursuit.
