Phelps fast at 1-96 Half Mile

Cory Keeney (44) and Jay Hoenk (I) headed the 17-24 year -olds at Midway MX.
Jamie Bowman (157) led Lane Cobb (333) around the Moroso Motorsports Park track.

J oe Phelps top ped the 500cc Pro-Am final at
the 1-96 Sp eedway Hall Mile .
At the start o f the final. th e two heal
win ners, Ron Fo rstn er and Jack Mayer , blew
ou t of the ho le with Phelps in lOW. Forstner
led u n til lap th ree, wh en a mech anica l fail u re
too k h im ou t o f the race. Th is left Mayer on
top. Phelps shado wed Ma yer for the next four
laps, the n the su n went down on Mayer as
Phelps drafted by on the back- stretch a nd cast
h is shado w.o n Mayer to the chec kered flag .
Gordon Schop ieray rod e a way with the cas h
in th e C mbo class. Sch opiera y found the

fas test line aro u nd th e wid e grooved oval and
o pe ned a gap o n the rest of the field. Mayer
and Forstner arg ued o ver second place money,
un til Dave Kol end a carne through wi th a move
tha t sen t Mayer to the back o f th e pack.
Forstn er kept a tig h t line, but Kol enda
managed to squeeze o n thr ou gh for th e pa yoff.
Brando n Rose went fish ing for tro phies in
the 65cc class. Rose started reeling In Mike
Forro fro m hi s J.O length advantage by lap
two. It too k six mor e laps, but Rose' s patien ce
pa id o ff, as he slipped by Forro wit h o nly
inc hes of race left to go .
Ro se tri ed to repeat hi s victory in the 85cc
class, but j ust as he made a da ri ng move to
th e ins ide, Rose, Bryan Bigelow, B.]. Leach ,
and Scott Sargen t a ll went down hard in turn
four . Ro se was th e o nly seriously injured rider ,
and he was flown to a trauma cen ter wi th
head inj u ries. According to hi s mother, Chris
Ros e, Brando n was in critical conditio n but
beginning to show signs of improvemen t at
th e time of this wr iting.

as well as th e 17·24 year -old class . Keen ey put
his Kawasaki s o ut front ea rly o n in each molO,
a nd ra n aw ay wi th six uncontested win s.
In the 25 Plus class Bryan Hunt launched
h is KTM in to an ear ly lead as th e star ting
ga te dr opped for th e first mOlD. Hunt held
o n to th e lead , despite the best effor ts of Chris
Hugh es to displace him. Tom Wentworth
rode stro ng ' to move u p from ei gh th o n th e
first lap to third, over Scott Steinle and Aaron
Kolb at the flag.
Hughes j umped into th e lead as the second
moto began, but Hunt had chain prob lem s
with his bike and dropped ou t of contention
earl y o n. Hughes had no problem wrapping
up the mota and taking th~ overall win. Tom
Gilbertson an d T om Wentworth co llided on
th e firs t lap while running second and third ,
a nd dropped well back in th e pack , a llowing
Scott T ruempi and Kolb to tak e over th eir
p laces.
Ji m Povolny , Jr. launched into the leadin
the firs t'I25cc B mo to , with Ja m ie Fahrendhol z an d Paul Neu man n providing pursuit.
Aaron Ca r lson had a poor staTt, an d was in
ninth a t the conclusion of the first lap. Carlson
was chargi ng and p icki ng off several ride rs
per lap. Ca rlson closed to ta ke second fro m

Mark Chin won the $1000 ShOOlout at Moroso
Motorsports Park for the second co nsecu tive
time, beat in g Mich ael Barnes a nd Don ald
J acks to tak e th e victory.
Chin had the hol eshot and led all the way
to th e fir st turn, but J acks took over th e lead
wit h a lat e-bra kin g dive to th e in sid e. Barnes
ma in ta in ed third wit h J ohn Choate and Rick
Herndon stic ki ng cl ose behind. J ack s held
the lead for the Iirst lap, th en Ch in unleashed
the power of h is 1000cc Yamah a to shoot
pas t Jacks ' Suzuki as they passed th e gra ndsta nds .
While Chin held the lead for the rest of
the race, the battle fo r seco nd heat ed u p as
Barn es passed Jacks to ta ke the runner-u p
spot. The to p three riders were o nly sepa ra ted
by sev eral b ike len gt h s th rou g houl th e
rema inder o f the five lap race with Chi n firs t
across the finis h line fo llowed by Barn es and
Jacks.
Barnes wo n the Unl imi ted GP face and took
. pan in o ne of th e best race ba tt les o f th e
week end, the 50-Mile GTO race. Ch in led
early in the race bu t en tered pit lan e o n lap
o ne and ha nded o ver the lead to Jacks. Barnes
wa s a very d ose seco nd and even tua lly passed
Jacks the next time across th e str ip. J ohn
Choa te wat ched th e leaders as he maintai ned
a com fortable third. By lap five the top riders
began lapping back mark ers and th at 's when
th e sho w began. Riding as if it were a fivelap spri n t, th e lead ers used the " mov ing
chica nes" to bl o ck each o the r as ea ch
att emp ted to take over the lead. Choate briefly
moved into seco nd as th e top three negot iat ed
th e slower riders. J acks was in secon d on th e
white flag lap an d stayed th ere u nt il the last
30 reel befor e th e chec kered flag when he shot
o ut of Barn es' dr aft lO tak e the win . Choate
was una ble to ca tch, Barnes and sett led fo r
th ird. Fourth-p lace Marcell o del Gi udi ce was
