Starting a new p rogr am. self-sponso red Bob
Sweeten came to T rail-Wa y Speedway with
just eno ug h mon ey to sign in a nd get home
with, so to eat o n the way hom e. he sta rted
a wi n o r sta rve campaign and kicked it off
ill grand style by winning three classes , the
750 and 600cc Pro. and Seni or finals.
The hardest win for Sweeten on paper had
to be th e 600cc P ro class wh ere he grabbed
th e lead fro m Rob Majeski , Scott Saunders
and Jim Hollister. Maj eski went into the lead
as the y co mp leted the first lap, but went into
th e first turn
hot and fell hard. bringing
o ut th e red nag. H o llister grabbed the lead
o n the restart, but Sweeten took the lead by
the second lap a nd p u lled away. Once he go,
into seco nd. Majeski closed the gap in the la te
laps. but cou ldn' t find the way arou nd o n the
hard. slick. na rrow groove.
T he Senior class was fairly easy for Sweeten,
as he too k the lead fro m J ohn Win sett com ing
o ff the fourth turn o n th e openi ng lap. an d
pulled away . H arold Hillard go t by Winsett
a few laps lat er and in th e lat er laps, J oe
Heber ling cha llenged Win sett for th ird .
Paul Crumling easily won one o r the two
750cc q ua lifing heat s. a nd he led th e star' o f
the fin al . with Sweeten , Scott Saunders a nd

Eric Sassaman gra bbed th e lead at th e sta n
o f the 600cc A fin al and p u lled away from
Dave Lesniak, Randy Shan k, and Kevin
Varnes. Varnes shot into second o n the thi rd
lap, whi le P hil Libhart moved into a th ree
wa y battle for third wit h Lesn ia k and Sha n k.
In the 250cc A final , Robert Mill er rook th e
lead for a lap. before Sassaman n ew by after
the first lap. ,Ch uck Buch anan moved up
chaIIenge Rand y Sha n k for third . Aft er
Bucha nan secu red th ird, Rick Win sett sta rted
to move up afte r a poor start a nd started to
pressure Buchan an for th ird bu t to no avail.
Jimmy Owens a nd Bill y Sti llwell p ulled
away from Sco tt Morrison a nd Justin Im bod y
as the 55cc Amateurs sta rted their final . Ow en s
kept a tigh t in side li ne while Still ma n kept
it a litt le mor e wide o pe n. runnin g up wh ere
th e bigger bik es go . Ow en s held the lead mo st
o f th e way. and in th e fin al two laps ran
virt ua lly SIde by side with Stillwell. Coming
o rr th e fin a l turn o n the last lap. StillweII
took th e lead for th e win .
