After finishing third in the 600cc National, Freitas (l5Y) won the Junior National. chance to catch Carr were hi s. Scott Stump took second from Mike Varnes for one of the few lead changes in the race. At the start of the main, Poovey occupied the outside pole, next to Morehead, Taylor, Carr, Freitas and Perreault. Morehead made the most of the black groove and led Taylor, Carr, Poovey and Dan Ingram into the first turn. Taylor slipped off the groove in turns three and four, and was seventh before he got back in line. Carr closed on Morehead. Freitas also slipped, and got back in line behind Poovey, Perreaut and Ingram. On the star t of lap nine, Carr got th e drive he needed off of four to get under Morehead as they entered turn one, but an instant later, Carr was down and in the hay bales. . " It happened so fast I don't even know what happened!" said Carr. " I think he got into som e of the mud on the inside, " added Morehead . While Carr scrambled to remount, Estep got off in almo st th e sam e spot to stop the race. Estep was up and joined Carr on the tail of th e restart. Poovey watched and wai ted for the mistake that did not happen. At the halfw ay point, Freitas go t past Perreault for the third spo t. Ingram was in fourth with Taylor , Pegram and Chan ce Darling in tow. With start er Bobby Lemming showing five laps to go, Taylor tried too hard in turn on e and lost the front whee l and went down. Pegram worked his way to sixth place at the checkers to keep h is hopes . of catch ing Carr alive . Wink Freitas and Cory Perreault made the quick turn around for the start of the junior event. Price gated in second. Most of the action was over second and third place, as Dan Koelsch , Tim Selby and Perreault argued for the position. Ai the halfway point, Perreault was on the move and put away Koelsch , Selby an d Price to take over second.
