Parker paid his dues the hard way, coming up through the ranks steadily for nine years before winning his first Grand National Championship. "It wasn't any kind of overnight success by any means," said Parker. One of the things about Parker that endears him to many, is the fact that he always likes to give credit to the people who have helped him achieve his great success. Never will you see Parker win a National without crediting his tuner Bill Werner . ' After conquering the record .4lst win at Indianapolis, Parker, like he has many times before, gave the credit to the people around him. One of the first people Parker acknowledged on the winner's podium was the man whose record he had just broken, Jay Springsteen. "Jay is very much a part of my success as a racer," said Parker. "When I was a dumb kid learning the ropes, Jay never shied away from giving me help and advice. Jay was the type of guy that wasn 't worried about his record being broken. He was always encouraging me along the way." . Spri ngsteen seemed genuinely happy to see Parker set a new mark. "I knew the record wouldn't hold forever," said Springsteen. "I'm just glad it was somebody that I had helped learn to ride. I remember when we used to travel to the races together. One time he had to fly back from California to get back to school and we were calling him and giving him grief about all the good times he was missing out there. " Parker continues the great legacy of dirt track riders from the state of Michigan, " I think Bart Markel was the guy who started it all,' said Parker. It was the legendary Bart Markel who held the record for the most AMA Grand National wins at 28 when he broke Joe Leonard's record of 27 in 1971. Kenny Roberts held the win record briefly from 1980 to 1982, but in April of 1982, Springsteen eclipsed Roberts with a win at the Sacramento Mile. So it was just a little over nine years that Springsteen held the record for the most AMA Grand National victories before Parker's 41st at Indy. Springsteen hopes his time isn't quite up for winning Grand National races. "I've had some bad luck here lately, but I'm going to Springfield to try and tie Scotty's record," said Springsteen. Besides Springsteen, there isn't anyone who could possibly surpass Parker's mark in the immediate future. Of active riders, Ricky Graham is the closest with • 25 Grand National wins. And just because Parker has set a monumental record, he isn't going to sit: back and rest on his laurels. "I 'd like to have about 45 wins I;>y the time this season's over" said Parker. "Right now, winning the Camel Pro title is the most important thing to me, and I'm going to need that kind of performance to have a chance." . COlt Scott Parker crosses the Indy Mile finish line for his record-setting 41st win. Parker took long time supporter Rick Toldo along on his victory lap. Tuner Bill Werner sports an ear-to-ear smile as he congratulates Parker. Parker's wins '12 side in their race for thi rd, an d Carr was credited with the sho w. posi tion. "I though t I go t hi m on the draft but I guess the officia ls didn't see it that way," said Pegram. Alth o ug h P egram moved into four th in the point sta ndings, J on es padded his third p lace points total by finishing fifth ahead of Farris. A large crowd gathered on the front straight to greet Parker after the cooldown lap. Rick Toldo, who helped Parker get hi s start in racing, was honored by rid ing with Parker on hi s victory lap . , Park er then threw hi shelmet, gloves and th e jacket portion of his leathers into the crowd. Hundreds of wellwishers surro unded the " King of th e Miles." It was a story book way to break the record. " I want to thank J ay Springsteen who encouraged me all the way," said an appreciative Parker. Springsteen joined Pa rker on the winner 's podium in a great sho w of sportsmanship. " I know exactly what he feels like," said Springsteen. " I had the same feeling about 10 years ago when I passed Kenny Roberts III National wins." 0: Results TIME TRIALS: I.
