~ pit board told him to concentrate on gathering points on Parker instead. He remained beh ind winner Stanton at a casual distance of five seconds before finishing second at a 12-second defici t. The Parker/Puzar battle carried them past third-place Evensen on lap 11 an d then Par ker displaced Puzar for good on lap 13.At the finish the Honda rider wa s third, just five seconds behind Healey and content to surrender just two points in their title battle. Puzar was three more seconds behind in fourth with a completely exhausted Evertsen rounding out the top five, more than a minute behind the lead ers. Kawasaki was the top Japanese rider in the race, finishing 10th place but quite ha ppy to have not been lapped by Stanton. At the start of the second moto on Sunday a huge coll ision saw Parker, Dymond, Strijbos, Herring and Tetsumi Mitsuyasu all hit the ground in turn one. Healey, Stanton, Puzar and Finland's Pekka Vehkonen all made a clean break from the 'carnage, and within a lap Healey was ope ning a short lead on Stanton. Parker remounted from the firstturn crash in 31st place and was up to 19th by the end of the first lap. He had to toss away his goggles after ' splittin g the lense in the crash. Parker needed to stay with in 10 points of H ealey to win the title, a difference of six places if Healey were to win the race. And through the first half of the moto it looked as if Healey wou ld do j ust tha t. For 13 la ps th e KTM ri der led Stanton, an acti on that the outspoken Healey found redeem in g. " T hey (Americans) can call us 'hasbeens' and 'never-weres' all they want," said Healey afterwards. " But I felt like I proved someth ing out there. And I saw Bob Moore kick Mike Kiedrowski's ass today. " Healey obviously still smarts from Stanton's infamous Unadilla remarks. But even with a grudge to keep him going, Healey couldn't shake Stanton. On lap 14 the four-time U.S. National Champion moved to the inside of Healey in a tight comer. Upon exiting the tum, Stan ton's rear wheel clipped Healey's front and sent the KTM rider crashing down. The 25,OOO-plus spectators gasped as Healey hit the dirt, but the Californian remounted q uic kly and again went after Stanton in hopes of garnering points on Parker, who was only in eighth and far enough back for Healey to still claim the title. However, Parker kicked it in on lap 15 and passed both Peter J oha nsson and Jorgen Nilsson to positi on hi mself in sixth for the Worl d title. . H ea ley, 18 seco nds adrift from Stanton but comfortably ahead of third-place Pu zar, also picked up hi s pace in a last-di tch effort to make up the three po in ts on Parke r. Wh en the check ered flag fell 10 minutes later, Healey was still 10 seconds shy of Stan ton. Parker crossed the finis h lin e almost a minute la ter in sixth place and was mobbed by his family and fans. The GP veteran was careful to first cross the fin ish line so as not to su ffer the sa me protests that sur rounded Georges Jobe's recent 500cc ti tle victory, where Jobe was mobbed before getting across th e checkered flag. Afterwards Par ker praised Healey's performance as well as that of Puzar, Vehkonen, and the other year-long challengers. . "It' s been one of those years where fate decides everything," said Par ker of h is narrow cham pionshi p win. ''I'm very happy to now be the first American ever to win two (MX) World titles and I look foreward to going home with my family to Louisia n a to celebrate. " Healey was upset with his last race fall but happy about his surprising season in general. " I' ve worked really ha rd to get myself into title contention this year," said the new number two in the world. " I don't think anyone, KTM incl uded , expected me to finish in the top five. But it's been a win-or-die seaso n for everyone, where you win on e mo to an d then throw it away the next. T hat kind of racing su its me, because you never know how fast you can go un til you cras h." Healey finished second overall in the standings, six po ints ah ead of Puzar, to mark the first time in the his tory of 250cc World Ch ampionshi p racing tha t American s occupied the top two pos itions. £N Results 125 MOTO 1: I. CRE SP~NEL ~ ~ If you've been to the United States Grand Prix or the American round of the World Superbike Series in the past three years, you probably already know about James Crespinel. His commissioned work includes portraits of Mikhail Gorbachev, Martina Navratilova , Michael Jorda n, Brian Bosworth and Steve Largent, in addition to images of James Dean, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe. He is quickly becoming one of the most sought after competition artists in the United Sta tes. Many world class riders themselves own original oil paintings by Crespinel and now lithographs of his works are available for both the collector and ent husiast alike, through Cycle News Products.
