" It wou ld have been easy, bu t I couldn 't pass a guy who was wavin g to the crowd," said G u stafsson. " H e deserved second place and I deserved th ird. An stie was j ust far enough behind tha t I didn't hav e to worry abo ut h im ." Anst ie finished fourth , four seconds behind Gustafsson. Geukens was mor e than 15 seconds behind in fifth, but hi s th ird in the stan dings was bol stered by the poor fin ishes of Mal in and L iles. Early in the race Malin had been right behind Ge ukens, bu t the 19-year -old Englishman cra shed before th e halfway point and was run over by Bar tol ini. Johan Boonen was sixth acros s th e fini sh line followed by J o Mart ens , Stu art Co yle and Stefan Larsson, while Li les got back to 10th p lace . After passing Robert o Costa, Li les lost his momentum and had to sett le for 10th . World Championship 250cc MX Series: Round IO Puzar's injury puts Parker in control MOTOLA. SWEDEN, AUG. 4 talian Alessandro Puzar's defense of his 250cc World Championship ended with a crash in th e first moto of the Swedish G P, leaving American Trampas Parker poised to add the 250cc cro wn to hi s 1989 125cc World Championship. And if Parker should falt er in the final ro u nd, compatriot Mike Healey, who moved into a tie with P uzar for second in the standings, wou ld likel y be crowned champion in J a p a n . H ealey, wh o fin ished th ird overall I behind winner Pekka Vehkonen and ru n ner-up Marcus Ha nsso n , trails Parker in the standings, 217-204. Puzar, wh o was co min g off a pointless U.S. 250cc G P at Unadilla, crashed alone in the first moto when he got cross-rutted on the face of a j ump . Puzar suffe red ligament and cart ilage damage to his knee and was unable to continue , although he bravely tri ed to start the secon d mota bu t co uld only .go a few hundred yards before th e pain in his knee forced him o ut. Swede Peter Johansson grabbed the holeshot in the first 40-minute plus two-lap moto and immediately established a lead he would keep to the finish. His only problem came late in . the race wh en a rock damaged his rear brake. Parker started o u t fourth, but halfway through the first lap he passed Emmepi/Chambers Honda teammate Mi ch ele Fanton and H ansson to assume second place, w'hich the Shreveport, Louisiana native held to th e checkered flag. H ansson moved to third wh ere he stayed to th e fin ish , wh ile Vehkon en fought his wa y th ro ugh the pack to tak e fourth away from Fanton a t th e finis h. Cali fornians Micky Dymond and H ealey would en d up 10th and 11th , respectively . Parker and J ohansson battled for th e lead earl y in the seco nd mo to until th e Swede go t by and opened up a fivesecond a d va nta ge.
