Faria was Bob by Schwartz in last p lace but looking for a line to move up. Faria began his assau lt on lap three as he moved around the o u tside o f Brant. Entering tum one of th e fourth lap, Faria went betw een Ackroyd and Beinert as th e two tried 10 stay ahea d o f the Natio nal Cham p io n and still avoid the riders directly in front o f th em . A lap later , Faria looked to have hi s sig hts set on mov ing ar ou nd Manch ester whe n unexpectedly Webb go t off th e inside !;:Toove and slid o UI towards the wall, leaving a gap between him and a surprised Finch. Faria didn 't hesitate and cu t around Man ch ester and between Finch a nd Webb to ass u me a lead that he would stretch o u t all the way 10 th e checkered flag. Finch kept hi s pose an d fini shed second wi th third go ing 10 Manch ester and fourth to Schwartz , who followed Far ia through th e pack up until hi s final m ove. Schwartz was the fir st to react as the starti ng tapes went u p for th e Scratch main and crea ted a lead that he never reli nq uishe d. Schwartz's drive and momen tu m carr ied h im very wide out in to the deeper din, and Far ia was also loo king to use the outsid e in his a ttem p t to overtake th e leader. This maneuver backfired wh en Schwartz went wid e and Faria had to back o ff 10 avo id hitting the wall or Schwartz. As the two riders were acting out their da nce at the front of the pa ck , Brant was reco ver in g fro m a very, poor start, drivi ng hard down on the inside line a nd com ing within a half a bike length o f tak in g the lead aw ay from Schwartz. But Schwartz used the dirt o n th e outs ide to increase his lead . Bra nt kept up a very quick pace with Far ia righ t behind him, an d m th e end Brant had to settle fo r second. Zechman eas ily won the 30+ final over Mar k Burkholder and Joe Heberling, bu t in the 40+ class, Dennis Mill er 'ga ve him fits fa.., most of th e race. Billed as the · District 15 TT Scrambles Championship, most of the fi nals were 12 la ps long. Wins in the Amateu r finals went to Bill y Sti llwell in the 55cc class, Brody Miller ho ld ing off Benjam in Mill er for the wi n in the 65cc cl ass, a nd Mike McKee, who used a downed rider to slip past John Winse tt for the 85cc class win . . Multi- Na ti o nal winner, Todd Winsett, easily won the 200cc fin al , whi le Kevin Mill er made it two in a to w in the 2505. Chuck Blessing was handed the O pe n class win wh en the two early leaders, Ri ck H aw k an d J ack Fra n klin, fell within a la p of each ot he r. Blessin g t hen had to hold off the lat e race challen ges o f Tom Hann um for th e wi n. John Win sett and Mike McKee qu ickly put so me d istance o n T om Skethwa y and Don al d Mullen in th e 85cc class as they battled for th e lead. Winsett kept behind, un til the six th la p, whe n a ride r wen t do wn in th e fou rth .turn. Wi th Win sett a nd McKee com ing up qu ickl y, McKee p icked the better line and slipped into the lead. McKee held on to th e lead to win by two lengths. Todd Wins ett put hi s H onda way o u t in front of Ro y Mill er and th e rest o f th e 200cc class, lead ing by up to a straigh t o n the nin th lap, but fell co mi ng ou t of the ch icane. Wins ett remounted in th e lead , but just barely. H e pulled away fro m Miller for th e win . Ja ck Fran klin and Ri ck H awk quick ly p ulled awa y fro m t he res t o f th e Open Am at eurs. H awk ch allen ged a nd took th e lead wh en Fra n klin had troubl e shifting o n the fourth la p. Two laps later, Frankl in tried to reta ke the lead coming off four , and H awk slid o ut as th ey headed for the straight. With an easy win in hand, Franklin managed to fall coming out o f th e in field and gave th e lead to Chuck Blessing. Tom Hannum started to close in o n Blessin g, especi ally in the lat er laps. As they came off th e fin al turn, H annum pulled beside Blessi ng, but couldn' t q uite get by. Blessing scored th e win. When the pack ro u nded turn o ne at th e start of the +25 class , Andreu led the way wit h Scott Miller, Wyndell Kern , David Kuxhausen & Tim Lozaw in two. Mi ller a nd Kern battled for th e second spot until Kern finall y shot by , b ut Andreu had already p ulled away with the lead. Mill er then repassed Kern exiting a tum . Zechma n (Ya m). ~. .Kreinbrook, Schlag sweep Lake Sugar Tree Motocross By Hen ry Muller AXTON, VA, JULY 20 KAZ Racing/Cernics-sponsored Greg Kreinbrook scored a double-mote win in the Open A class, wh il e Billy Schlag piloted h is Kawasaki to a I -I finis h in th e 125cc A division in Saturday Amateur Da y action at Da vid Bailey's Lake Sugar T ree MX Raceway. Kreinbrook was on the gas in th e firs t Open A rnoto and stre tched hi s holeshot into a big lead by the end of the o pe ni ng lap. Chris Taylor settled h is Yam aha into second, while a fierce bailie heated up for third between Richard Wendelken, Alan Kocotas a nd Brian Long. Robert Gerken joined the fray and soon began picking off riders in an allempt 10catch the leaders. Krei nbrook wa s gone with T aylor crossing safely in seco nd, while Gerken's charge left him in third ahead of Wendelken a nd Long. Moto two was not as easy for 17-year -old Kreinbroo k, as he chased Gerken until the final circuit whe n he shot past an d took the win ov er Gerken. Wendelken was next followed by Kocotas and Lo ng. The 125cc A class firs t moto wi n ner, Bill y Schlag, had his limits tested, as Jim Neese tucked in behind Schlag on the firs t lap and put on the pressure. Schlag never missed a beat and took the win over Neese, with Patrick Slate getting a hard-earned third. Brad Struny and Brett Beauchamp rounded o ut the to p five. . Schlag was q ui ckest off th e do wnhill start line in mota two, and set sail for a perfect score wi th a duel for second forming be tween Beauch am p, Larry Andrews a nd Manuel Ar no ld. Beauchamp's ag gr essive riding style earned him the runner-up honors, wh ile Andrews netted third over Arnold and Strun y. H o nda o f Winston-Salem 's Jay Hauser scored a double molO win in the Open B division, finish ing ahead of Steve Starnes and T erry Carty. Hauser was on his way 10 a sweep of th e Plus 25 class l"hen he ran mto a snag in th e form of Keith Rivenbark and Sonny Mi tch ell . Hauser was close 10 the lea ders in th e second moto when a spill left him 15 seconds back with only a few laps remaining. As the whi te flag came o u t it was Rivenbark and Mitchell with H a user clos ing. Wh en th e leading tri o dropped behind the da m, H auser mad e his mov e and emerged with the lead , while Mit chell pa ssed Rivenbark, as well , and th e top three crossed the line in that order. Greg Rand went four-for-four in the 125cc B and Schoolbo y classes to keep a win streak ali ve th at has lasted since early in th e seaso n.
