This year, Hawkins will be mounted on a more familiar two -stroke machine and should nail ano the r gold medal. Hawkins would like nothing better than to beat two-time ISDE 125cc class winner, England's Paul Edmondson. Perhaps the most respected rider on the team is New Jersey's Drew Smith, 34. H is la id back, never-say-die , attitude , not to mention his mastery of muddy and root- infested trails, has rewarded him with six gold medals. No American has ridden as many Six Days as Smith - 14. Like Hawkins, Smith lives for the tight and gnarly tra ils, and usually no obstacles can stop him. He is one of th e m ost persistent ri de rs in the country. While other riders are ho uring out, you can always count on Smith arriving at th e chec ks, usually on time.
