IN THE WIND By Papa Waley Guik Shop Continued from page 49 ano ther represen tat ive, safety officer Hans Bahmer, to make yet another track ins pection, and they wo u ld make a fina l decision on the basis of his report , exp ected shortly. Privately, however, it was clear that the Brazil ian GP is effectively off, since no promoter would cont inue wi th h is investment 'after the team s had decid ed not to attend. Bahmer's rol e is that of hat chetman and diplomat , wh o will try and find a way of calling the race off with a min imum los s o f fac e for a ll concerned. Assen is currently top of the list as an alternative venue to take the place ofthe Brazilian G P. Zegwaard said that an announcement would be made next week, but the Dutch were understood to be ready and willing to step in and take the September date, to maintain the number of GPs on the ca lendar. J os Vaessen's fact-finding mission to J apan at the weekend of the Suzuka Eight-Hour left him in absolutely no doubt over th e re actio n of the Japanese factories currently involved in racing to the proposal to replace the current V-four 500s with four- cylinder four-strokes. Earlier, the FIM had suggested that the factories were merely paying lip-service to the notion of maintaining the current formula to satisfy their customers, the racing teams. It seemed the FIM had divi ned the true intentions of the factories to be quite different. Now a letter signed by senior directors of the Honda Motor Company (T a keo Fukui), the Yamaha Motor Company (K. Nomura) and Suzuki Motor Corpo ration (Mitsuo Ito ) stated clearly: " We requir e the cont in ua tion of the existing two- stroke regulations for several years and will endeavour to in crease our p articipation in th e class." The letter said that the big three considered th e FIM 's ro le was to retain the status of the 500s as th e most important class in racing, and added that the FIM 's decision lO introduce four- strok e engines would not ach ieve this goal. " It is therefore of no interest to Honda, Yam ah a and Suzuki. " Perhap s th e most im portant message con ta ined in th e letter from the manufacturers was its o pe ning one: "As motorcycle manufacturers we a t Honda, Yamah a and Suzuki hav e been cooperating with th e FIM for man y years, and will do so in the future." That can be interpreted as a vote of confidence in th e Switze rla nd-based motorcycle race governing bod y and sho u ld give those looking to break awa y from th e FIM reason for co ncern .
