Con tinued from page '1 take advantage of the release from restricted use of high ly develo ped and very user -friendly gear from the car world. The kit, by PI Electr on ics of Cambridge, proved immediately beneficia l, no t least by boos ting Schw antz's m ora le. H e h ad been fee li n g left behind by the adva nced custom-ma de eq uipment used by Wayne Rainey on Team Marlboro Roberts, and admitted: " It was a condition of my sign ing on for two more years that we wou ld get equipped with computer gear but I' didn 't expect it to happen so quickly." Politics did a lot more th an me rely simmer at th e British GP, alt ho ugh not much actually happened - not above ground, anyway. The first story to break was one linkin g the nam e of Ion Tiriac, former ten n is star and now sports magnate; manager of Bori s Becker amo ng other things, with th e rumored brea kaw ay World Series. Tiriac did n ot den y th at h e wa s consi de ri n g d evelopi n g th e idea , pres uma bly on behalf of Bernie Ecclestone. Ecclestone was not to be seen, bu t was represented by law yer Max Mosely, who was hi s right-hand man in FOCA when he seized control of Fl car racin g. But he mere ly said that he was j ust there to have a look, and that the re were so many differences between the diverse interests on the trac k in all th e GP classes and the 12-odd teams who made up FO CA th at he cou ldn't draw any direct parallels. Controversi a l FIM p resident l o s Vaessen was again keeping a low profi le in En gland, bu t Jo Zegwaard did th e opp o site, calli n g a p re ss conference to answer any questions abo ut the FIM. In stead, he sto newalled bra vely and defiantl y over most controversial matters, earning the most kudos simply for having the courage to take to th e sta ge to face his cri tics. On the question of the four- strokes in the 500cc clas s, he shrugged aside the th ree factori es' request to maintain the sta tus quo, and said: " We are waiting to see if there are any better ideas. " He refused to nam e an y of the factories he claimed were beh ind th e fou r-stroke move, and was emb roiled in a stand-. off with th e Italian press he had falsely accuse d of dishon esty. O n' th e rumb ling Brazilian GP disaster, Zegwaa rd exp la ined how th e FIM 's hands were tied by the regulations, and they h ad n o p os sib le grounds to cancel the ra ce. The normal de adlin e for h avi n g the track in h omologa ted co n d i tion wa y i n advance of the event (the rule that threw a costly wrench in the works at Easter n Creek) had been wai ved by presidentia l decree, he said; but in all other matters the y were bound by the rule book. Bu t the FIM was sendin g --'-- - - - - Continued on page 55 U.S. GP saved by last-minute agre~ment . G eorges lobe and J acky Martens an d all of th e other riders and team s in the Wor ld Cha mp ionship 500cc MX Series had to wait u ntil six minutes before .the start of the August II L ux emburg GP, in wh ich l obe won th e seri es titl e, to find ou t whether or not the race wou ld be the final round of the series. A last minute agreement en sure d th at th e August 25 U.S. GP would clo se o ut the series. . What led to th e pos sib le dropping of World Championsh ip sta tus from the U.S. event was a question of trave l money . Although a number of riders had trie d as a matter of ro utine to obtain an increased tra vel in demnity for th e Gl en H elen U.S. 500cc MX G P from Roger DeCoster, who was recen tly in Europe on the beh al£ of U.S. GP promoter Motolink to sign rid ers u p for the America n round , all of the top riders had already ma de arrangemen ts to tra vel to Cal ifornia , with the exception of the injured Kurt Nicoll and fellow Brit Mervyn Ans tie, who has not been perfo rm ing well. According to Motolink 's Yvon ne Baumann , the riders had agreed to a $1500 travel indem nity . "The rid ers were very conten t with that a mo u nt, " said Baumann. Bu t as the Lux embourg G P was preparing to begi n, an emerge ncy meeti ng in Geneva, Switzerland, of the FIM Executive Council , comprised of FIM president los Vaessen and vice-p residents Fra ncesco Zewrbi and AMA Preside nt Ed Youngb lood , was decid in g wh ether to - deprive th e Glen Helen event of cham pions hip status. t, ]u~ p.resident ~Ibe~t Hofhuis explained: " At the eMS ,(the F!M 's motocr.oss . commlsslOn) rneeung In February 1990 we reworded the-regu la tion concerm ng ."}he trave! a,ira"~geme~ts for~pv~~s?S G Ps and in the ".rr.ti~utes of lth~meetin? .it was speCifically mentioned.•whlcli~GPs wo ul d be considered to be ' oversea s In 1991, namely th e thr~ Caii\1~American G Ps, Japan andft he ·GPs' in the USA," Hofhu is.began, ,[ . b "These organ izers are required to pay the airfare of the top 15 riders, th eir mechanics and 300 kilograms (660 pounds) freight . DeCoster has offered the m $1500. I understan d that air tra vel can be obtai ned for $900 a head and air freight wou ld be aro und another $550, which mak es a total of $2350." According to Baumann, special airfare s had been arranged through American Airlines, an event sponsor, lod gi ng provided for some contesta nts, plus DeCoster has made special arrangements to su pp ly mach in ery th rough dealersh ips for man y of the rid ers, a ll in addition to the start mo ney,:. " I made it clear to Mr. Vaessen that I must have a decision one way or the other before th e first race (in Luxembo urg) ," said H ofhuis. " We cannot expect l obe and Martens to go out racing for th e title without kn owing if there is anot her round or not after today . T h is mornin g th e Executive Co uncil advised the AMA tha t the FIM rules must be followed , and th e AMA finall y agreed to these terms at I:24 p.m. (European time)." As a resu lt , Motolink will h ave to pay an additional $12,000 in travel indemnities to th e riders. "T he FI M basicall y said either pay (the extra am ount) or we' ll cancel th e event ," said Baumann. " We didn 't want to let anybod y down." R umor s were started prior to the Luxem bourg GP that th e AMA would withdraw . from the Motocross des Nations if they were forced to accept the more expensive . terms for the G P, but they were just ru mors. " We're not pleased with the settlement," sai d AMA Communications Man ager Bill Am ick, " bu t we wo n 't use tha t as leverage, it 's not appropriate. It 's our intention to send a team (to th e Motocross des Nation s). It (the team) has n 't been entered yet since we haven 't made a decision on exactly who will ride. But we will talk seriously abo ut our fu ture in vol vement in World Championsh ip MX. "
