since I was a youngster and th ey never pushed me or tri ed to force me to either do som ething or not go somew here. They were always behind me doing what I wanted to do. I think I was lucky to ha ve such parents. Fabi enne has been the same; she has always supported me without pushing. It is very ha rd to stay at the top and th ey have played an impo rta nt part in helping me to stay at th e top for 13 years. How long do you ho pe to con tin ue racing? . For as long as I get u p in the morning and have th e motivat ion to win , an d feel tha t I can do so. When I start to wa ke up and th ink that I don't want to race motocross an y more, then I will stop. If I ever feel tha t I do no t have the mach inery, p hysical condition and .team organization to win , th en I will stop immediately. Have you finished racing sup ercross? No. I am in negotia tion to race the Masters of Motocross this autumn. I am ready to do the supercross ro unds, but I want to have the tim e to build up the motivation and preparati on to ride them . I am no longer interes ted in getting a call on a Wednesday offer ing me money to sta rt in a supercross on the weekend . Now , I on ly wan t to race if I am properly prepared. Five or six years ag o, I wou ld accep t con tracts at th e last mi nute for races, and it was oft en in these races that I cras hed a nd got hurt. I was younger then and wondered why. I can see now that I was trying to do th in gs wh en I wasn 't properly prepared, and I don ' t want to do that sort of thing again. The 500cc GPs are sa ved for the i m m edia te fu ture, but th e FIM 's motocross commission still see ms determined to ins tigate some changes in the format of GP racing. Do you think this is necessa ry? Of course I thin k tha t the present system co uld be improved, and perhaps it would be a good move to have mor e than one class racing sep arately but at the same meetin g as is happen ing this year wi th the J apan ese G P. But cancelling one or more classes is not the way to go. If they try to restrict the cham pionsh ips to only one cla ss, then th ey will kill . motocross. Ju st took at road racin g. T ha t is probably a t its highest po int ever as far as image and public awareness is conce rne d, bu t th ey have three solo class es. If you onl y have one class, then you only have one single winner an d you redu ce th e number of household names by a th ird. I think tha t we ca n improve motocross , bu t we must do it all together . T he riders, the industry , the people from the federati on a nd the press sho uld all be talk ing together abo u t it. At the moment every group is stayi ng in its own corner. We cou ld hav e a mixture of 125 and 250, 125 and 500 or 250 and 500 doub lehead ers , even some GPs with only one class . Perh aps we co u ld even have 16 rounds in each seri es, like in road ra cing, rather than 12. The exp enses for th e industry to contest more than one class wou ld be signi fican tly reduced and th e public would be presente d wi th a more attrac tive program . Bu t reduci ng the numb er of classes is not the answer. ••••• Goi ng into th e series finale at Glen Helen, J obe holds an in surmountable 43-point a dvantage over Jacky Martens. Jobe will end the season at . the U.S. GP and re turn home to Belgium with another 500cc World Championship to ad d to his collection, which already in cludes the 1987 500cc crown as well as th e 1980 and 1983 250cc World Championship titl es.
