Ph il Ray took a wire-towire victory. getting th e hol eshot and pu lling a way throughout th e race. Lee Parker and AI Nesshoefer provided the show, dueling for second place. Parker held hi s ground to take the number two spot a nd Nesshoefer was a close th ird. In the 250cc Vintage ma in, David Barkley grabbed the ho leshot, o nly to be passed by J ohnny Isaacs com ing o ut of turn o ne. Randy Feldhau s also got pa st Barkley in turn two , wh ich set the stag e [or a wh eel-to-wheel co nfro nta tio n between Isaacs and Feldhau s. Feldhau s pUI pressur e on Isaacs. but was unabl e to get past until lap eight , whe n he passed Isaacs in th e switch backs. Feldhaus was able to keep the lead [or o ne lap , until he went high in the sweeper a nd a llowed Isaacs to regai n th e lead. j ohn McClellan d, after a poor start, worked hi s way through th e pack to finis h th ird. Th ree of the na tion 's top- 10 riders were o n hand to compe te i n the Master class. Mill ers Mo tor cycles-sponsored Kip Webb , riding th e new Fantic K-Roo , posted a low score of 40 to score first. Kenny Ledu c o n h is Aprilia, lin ished seco nd with 94. Taking third with 96 wa s Andy Sa um . In the Expert class, Howar d G albrea th an d Neil Belvo ir fought it o ut all day. Each rider ended th e day with 40 points dropped. Ga lbrea th had loo p s o f 12/1 2/1 6, wh il e Belvo ir 's loops were 17/1 4/9. The win was gi ven to Ga lbrea th wit h 14 clean s, co mpa red to Belvo ir 's 11. Kenny Lane mad e it a clos e th ird with 46. Most of th e sections were long and fair ly wide, givi ng the riders room for mor e than jus t o ne line. T he section terra in co nsisted mostl y of granite rocks and loos e sand. Two sectio ns wer e th e exceptions. In sectio n seven . rid ers had to negotiate steep hi ll side s, tight turns a nd ve ry loo se din th at made it cha lle ngi ng. In moto one, Kennedy was th ird oil the line beh ind Rocky Robling a nd J im Conner. Larry j ones quickl y moved fro m fourth place 10 pick o f( Ke nned y a n d Conner to ch a l len ge Robling. J on es pa ssed him o n the insid e a nd sett led into a com fortable lead . Mea nw hile, Kennedy was clos ing distan ce on Robling and overlook him in th e wh oops. At midrace Jones found Kennedy breath in g down h is neck , wai ting [or any o pportun ity to stea l th e lead . Jon es held o [f numerous pass a ttemp ts by Kenned y, until the last lap , when Kenned y charged by Jon es for the win . In ma lO two Kennedy was u nca tchable as he came o[f th e lin e in the lead and was never serio usly cha lle nged . J erry Fren ch a nd Ken Beaver battled in th e Up T he H ill J u nior class. After Fren ch dominat ed lhe first mo to. Beaver turned the tabl es in ro und two by stea ling th e lead . Fren ch was kn ock in g hard al Beav er's back doo r, trying to shake hi s lead . Beaver kept Fren ch o n th e bac k burner as he took th e night's wi n, an d firsl overall for the series. Cha d Scho lz sna tched the lead fro m j .].
