the majority of the riding for Mad Dog. Mike Harth , who usuall y p uts in two hours on the bi ke, was bitten by a spider prior to the race and it must have been a particularly vicious critter because his whole lower leg went n umb, maki ng it hard to find th e shifter. Considering that both Mad Dog and The Human Race Team used the same Daytona-compound Michelins, it was somewhat surprising that HRT didn't encounter the same problems. The Bimota, though, is some 40 pounds ligh ter, which adds up in an endurance race - in rider fatigue as well as tire wear. Quarterley explained: " Mine was worn out, so I knew th eirs (Mad Dog ) would be worse - I was riding to save th e front tire." A strategy echoed' by Rentzell, who cou ld be seen ha nging way off on the banking, in order to " cool off, and save the tires by keeping them off their edges." Apparently, it worked better for Quarterley. GTU ac tion sa w " Dr . Bob" (a dentist) Meister and Orion Racin g take a commanding .th ree-Ia p win over Shawn McNary's Elin Racing squad. Meister's team ran the race on street compo u nd Bridgestone Battlax tires. Orion would have been second if Team Toomer had not run into a particularly annoying problem while running way out fron t. The fuel pump o n their Rob Muuy-built Kawasak i ZX600 quit in the closi ng hour. The team yanked it off and ran the system via gravity, sp u tteri ng to thi rd , yet sti ll in command of th e points chase by a whooping 26 over O rion . Also bowing ou t of th e GTU race o f attrition for the lead was T eam America GT U. Rider J ohn Condron crashed the Yamaha FZR600 int o the grass in turn one, with only 18 minutes remaining. The bik e was fine, but th e track officia ls would not let team owner Frank Slaughter reclaim it, and he was very angry. The loss of about 10 laps in th e close-running GTU field is more th an an etern ity, so Team America went from dicin g for th e lead to an eigh th in -class fin ish.
