The Humans topped Gold Hill Racing (Ya m) by two laps in th e three-hour race with Yamaha of Jacksonville fin ishing third. The GTU class was won by Orion Racing (H o n) over Elin Racin g (Ya m) and Team Toomer (Kaw). Australian Kevin Magee will team with Doug Chandler on th e Nescafe Yama ha for the July 28 Suzuka 8Hour. Once aga in, Rothmans H onda's Michael Doohan a nd Wayne Gardner will tea m up for HRC. H onda had asked Rothmans Kan emo to Ho nda 's Luca Cadalo ra to join Australian Darryl Beat tie on a Hondabacked squad, but the Italian declined. The International Racing Teams Association (IRTA) h as recom· mended to th e FIM that th ey no t go io th e Interlago s circu it for th e Brazilian GP o n September 8 because safety improve me n ts that th ey asked for were not do ne. The Canadian, who was backed by Shoei and Ohlins, was pleased with his performance and will be racing in the next two GPs in France and England, though he has to return between them for a race commitment in Canada. The rumor o f Team Marlboro Roberts Yamaha a n d Lucky Strike Suzuki switching from Dunlop to Michelin su rfaced again a t th e Du tch GP. Jacques Mor elli, Michel· in 's man on th e scene, had previously said a decision on wh ether they would have the capacity to build enough tires for the extra teams would be made in mid-July. The rumor has the teams on Michelin rubber for th e British GP at Donington Park in earl y August. American sideca r passenger Peter Essaff was dropped from Dutchman Egbert Streuer's Lucky Strike team at the Dutch GP and joined forces with Brit Gary Thomas in the Motorsports Import LCR. According to Streuer, Essaff was dropped du e to lack of experience, which Essaff readily conceded, adding th ere wer e no hard feelings. The Californian was headed home after Assen , but pl anned to return for th e French GP hoping for a chance to drive.o ne of th e chairs. In Holland, Essaff and Thomas qualified 22nd but crashed twice o n the third lap of the 16-lap rac e, th e second stunt in a sixth-gear, left-h and kink that tor e th e body off th e mach in e, th ough neither was hurt. "T wo cras hes in one lap," Essaff said. . " If you ca n't win, you m ight as well have fun ." Streu er, with his new pas senger Derek J ones of Britain, won th e race. British frame build er Steve Harris said at the Dutch GP th at he was building 15 Yamaha YZR500 replica frames, to Yamaha specs, for sale alone or with a Yamaha engine. Kenny Roberts has already said he would bu y 10 for sale in th e U.S. The frame alone is expected to cost roughly $20,400 a nd a complete bike with a spares kit about $85,000. The bikes will be fitted with Ohlins suspension and co nven tional steel brakes. Marlboro Roberts Yamaha 's John Kocinski turned in th e fastest lap ti me of th e two-day IR TA test at Paul Ricard in the south of France on July 5-6. Kocinski clocked a one- m in ute, 22A-second lap . Kocinski's teammate Wayne Rainey was seco nd quickest a t I:22.6 just ahead o f Rothmans Honda's Michael Doohan a t 1:22.7.
