Morehead bobbled in turns three and four. allowing Pegram to close in . Although Pegram moved in, Morehead held on to score th e win ab oard the KK Motorcycle Supply/Shepherd Chemicals/F&S·H-D/HSRlJohn Dragoo/Bell /Storz/Works/Supertrapp/ Zoom Cycle Suppl y-backed HarleyDavidso n XR750. Pegram crossed th e finish line in seco nd , whi le Darling scored th e third di rect transfer positi on to the final. Pa rker led th e field into turn one in th e seco nd h eat , a nd looked for the fastest line arou nd th e ro ugh, half-m ile co u rse. J ones, Spri ngsteen and Atherton chased Parker a t th e sta rt, but Atherton qu ick ly went hi gh on th e track a nd scooted into seco n d. Springsteen pressured J o nes for th ird , bu this chances at scoring a 41st ca reer win ended when hi s engine began spew ing o il o n la p seven . J ones ro de a lo ne in the th ird transfer spot, whi le Pa rker an d Atherton a rg u ed over the lead. At he rto n h el d t h e poi n t posi tion bri efly, bu t it was Pa rker 's ITT/ Bell/ Supertrapp/ H OG /S BS/ Circle Bell / AIW of America-backed factory Harley tha t cro sse d th e fini sh li ne first. Atherton was forced to settle for seco nd , while J ones came h ome in th ird. Carr stormed orr the li ne in th e third. and final heat rac e. Poovey, Roeder a nd Durell e chased th e seri es points leader, but to no avail. Carr pushed his Ara i/Hap J ones/Sunoco/Yoko / Kn ig h t/ ITT-bac ked facto ry H arley out to a co m fortable lead o ver th e rest of the field. Roeder got by Poovey in turns three a nd four, as did Durell e at th e halfway point. Carr scored a n uncontested win over Roeder . whi le Durelle secu red a trip to th e fin al with his third place fin ish . Semis Bo u rr et wa s fast est off th e line in the first 10-lap sem i, but Bro w used the high lin e to assume th e lead on lap one. Wi ll Davi s and 1990 Roo kie of the Year, Mike Hale argue d over third. but Davi s pulled from th e track o n la p five with a b lown engi ne. Hale p roceeded to close o n Bo u rret , an d dove under the Canadia n to score the runner-up position. Brow greeted th e checkered flag with a comfortable lea d over Hale and Bo u rr et, who sco red th e third tra nsfer position to th e main. Farris and Rogers battled through out th e second sem i, wh il e Bri an Atherton , th e o lder brother o f Team H arley-Da vidson 's Kevi n Atherton, rode a lone in th ird . Rogers held the lead at th e crossed flags , but at th e check ered , it was Farris out front. Farris scored th e win just in ches ahead of Rogers and a di stant Atherton. The rest of the field would be forced to spectate. Junior N atio n a l Fourteen Juniors fill ed th e starting lin e a t th e start o f th e IO -Iap final. H eat race winners Roy H art a nd Brett Beyer were fast est o rr th e line, but P a t Buchanan, Doug O 'Boyle and Eri c O ' Boyle were in ho t pursuit. Beyer dropped from the front o f the pack wi th a h ig h speed m iss, b u t Eri c O 'Boyle lost co ntrol in tu rn th ree a nd brought o u t the red flag o n la p six . Beyer 's tea m mad e quick repairs to th e H arley, whi le the medi cs attended to Eric O 'Boyle. At the restart , Roy H ar t and Buchanan a rg ued over the lead, but Hart q u ick ly put his H a rt Raci n g / Neil Keen/Bell / L o u' s Leat h er s/M erlin Hart -backed Wood R ota x out front. Do ug O 'Boyie and James Hart scooted . Parker (I) pressured Carr (20) for the lead, but was forced to back off the pace and settle for second, after losing his right footpeg. into second and third, respectivel y, but O 'Bo yle's en gi ne gave up on th e front stra igh t. Beyer ch arged th rough th e pa ck a n d found hi s way past J ames H art, but ran o ut of tim e befor e h e co u ld ch a lle n ge Ro y Hart for th e win. Roy Hart sco red th e win over Beyer a nd J ames H art. N a ti o n a l Fast heat winner Parker occ u p ied the outside pole a t th e start o f th e 20lap fin al. Joining Parker on th e front ro w were Carr, Moreh ead , Kevi n Atherton, Roeder a nd Pegram, whi le Jones, Du relle, Bro w, H a le, Farris and Darling made up row two. Bria n Atherton , Rogersand Bou rr et made u p row three. Morehead was fas test a t th e flash of the gre en ligh t, a nd led Ca rr. Kevin Atherton a nd Roeder into turn o ne. Both Atherton and Roeder rode th e h ig h lin e, a nd swooped past Morehead a nd Ca rr o n the opening lap. Chance Darling lo w-sided in turn three and greeted th e hay bales, wh ile Pegra m pulled from th e track with a missing air filter. Da rling lai d on th e side o f th e track for three la ps before th e red fla g came out , bringinng th e Rolling Thunder Show to a halt. Darling wa s sha ken , but was able to mak e th e restart. Atherton grabbed th e lead a t 'the restart, wi th Roeder, M orehead, Carr and Parker in tow. Atherton a n d Roeder swapped th e lead severa l times, while the rest o f th e field struggled to stay o n two wheels . The ro ugh track ca u gh t nearl y every ride r o rr guard a t lea st once. At the halfway point, it wa s Pa rker , Carr a nd Moreh ead jo ined by Atherton a nd Roeder, with each rid er taking turns at th e point position. Morehead and Carr made co n tac t as th ey entered tu rn three. bu t Mo reh ead 's bid for the lead en ded on la p 15, when h is mo tor bega n to m iss. Morehead was quick ly swa llowed up by Carr, Parker , Roeder and Farris. Carr rod e th e high line and assu med th e lead whi le Pa rker and Roeder struggled down low. Parker 's cha rge was also cu t sho rt , when he lost hi s right footpeg o n lap 16. Carr went . o n to score th e w in a head o f Pa rker, Roed er , Farris a nd Moreh ead. Rodney Farris (92) fin ished fourth , while Kevin Atherton (23) faded to six th. " I go t a br ea k whe n Scotty and George ra n lower o n th e track ," sai d Carr. " I ra n u p top. a nd was a ble to make it work. T he track wa s ro ugh , bu t I o n ly d id two tank-slappers!" " W h en Morehead a n d Carr go t togethe r in front o f me, I had visions of San J ose," sa id Parker, referring to hi s cras h a t la st yea r's Sa n J ose Mile. " T hat was also a bo u t th e tim e th at I lo st my Ioo tpe g , and I though t, ' Let's take 16 points a nd go o n to the next race; there 's a lot of races left. ' " "I h it a hol e a nd almost crashed ," said Roeder. " My bars got bent down and I lost my co ncentrat io n. Chris ro de th e line that I should have, but I rode my ass o rr."
