Ball led until lap two, wh en J essee Fin ch and Bren t w erner raced a rou nd eac h side o f him , dropping Ball to third. H owever , before th e lap fini shed, Gary Ackroyd and Tony Bien ert tangl ed in (urn three an d brou gh t out a red nag. For the resta rt, the race revert ed to the last co mpleted lap and th at put Ball back in front. Fin ch manned seco nd spo t with Wern er th ird . Werner gamb led, and lost by going to th e outsid e. As soo n as Wer ner ventured to the deep dirt, Scott Brant streaked by on the in side for third. Bra n t was o n a run, and he tried to take Fin ch for second as they hit tum one on lap four . However. Bran t got a bit too aggr essive and knoc ked Fin ch down. Out came another red and referee Jim Fishback sent Brant to the pe nalty lin e. O nce agai n, Ball started with the lead with Fi nch 'in the secon d position. Wern er agai n wen t to the o utside and th is tim e mad e it work. He was getti ng the necessary drive and as he was ready to blow by Finch a nd Ball, his motorcycle th rew in th e towel o n la p five. O ver th e nex t th ree lap s, Finch co uld not get close to Ball, and had to settle, for second. T hi rd and fourth wen I to Steve Lucero a nd Rob Pfetzing. Traccoli made a clean sweep, winning all three motos cleanl y. Strong fast at Castle Rock TT By Derryl Anderson CASTLE ROCK. WA, JUNE 8 Ro tax- mou nted Kirk Strong took home th e lar gest sha re of the purse in the Junior/Expert Pro class at the Cast le Rock TT. The track and the wea ther were perfect as Strong held o ff the lik es of Rand y Roos e, Speed y Kell a nd ot her Northwest pr o racers. In the !irst Junior /Expert heat race, Jeff An nen gra bbed th e ho leshot over Strong, Del Sch ni tzer, Roos e, Kell and nati onally ranked road racer Mike Su llivan. By lap four Strong had tak en the lead fro m Annen and Roose and Kell go t by Schnitzer. The orde r remained th e same 10 the chec kered n ag. Local favorite Ch arlie Brown go t the initial lead in heat two, follow ed by Jeff H iatt, Dan Sta nley. T ro y Rose a nd Dave And erson . By lap three Stanley had slid by H iatt and Brown for th e lead . At th e end it was Stanley, Brown, Hiatt, Rose, Pat Munyon and J o h n Meyers. In th e sem i it was Sch n itzer, Su lli va n and Anderson taki ng th e tra ns fers to the main event, After two anxious restarts. Stron~ go t th e holesh ot in the main , followed by a tight pack consisting of Roo se, Brow n , Kell , Annen, Schnitzer, and Sta n ley. Bro wn and Kell were extremely dose, then Brown slid o u t in th e right-ha nder. Kell moved up on Roose a nd was trying him everyw here. Lap five saw Schnitzer slide out, then Troy Rose passed Ro n Wa ters and th e final order was set. At th e checkered nag it was Strong going wire to-w ire for the win with Roose taking second and Kell almost making a pass at th e nag. Strong a lso won th e JUnior/Expert dash for cas h , while Sha ne Butchart took th e Pro-Am mon ey. The first Pro-Am heat race was in itiall y led by Matt H old en , wh o wa s foll owed closely by Dav e Ste ri ng, Sha ne Butch art, J ohn Wh itm ore. Scott McPherson and Brain Lowe. Butchart was all o ver Steri ng and o n la p three he slid under Ster ing and went a lter H olden , wh o he pa ssed a lap la ter. At the finish it was Butcha rt firs t, Hol den second, and Steri ng thi rd. J eff And erso n led all th e way in ' hea t two, followed by J erry Brow n in g, Steve McCa ul ey, La rry Kessel a nd Bru ce Scott. In the main even t it was H olden gett ing another good star t, but by" lap two Anderson had taken o ver th e lead and he went on to win . Katin a nd Ra nd battl ed for the lead. but Rand even tua lly blasted by Katin over a jump to regain th e fro nt position. Mean whIle, Stell a lso mo ved by Katin to tak e back secon d. Rand stayed in first, wit h Steel seco nd. Thir d remai ned undecidt-d as Katin was p urs ued by Adam Merri ck. Merri ck and Katin rode in u n iso n aro u nd the course. Merri ck mad e severa l un successful bids to ge t by Katin. but Katin hung o n to thi rd, wilh Merr ick a d ose fourth. Rand was unstoppable in th e second malO. a nd cha rged to a n uncontested win . In the 125« A class , Mark Weaver struck o u t of the sta rt ing gate like lightning. Scott Watkins quickly new by Weaver for th e lead. In th e seco nd turn Manul Arnold took charge. Positions cha nged rapidly, but Arnold held onto first , wh ile Jay Poling moved in . By lap three,' Hayden Rich ards had worked his way into second behind Arnold. Richa rds passed Arnold a nd held o n for th e win . Arnold dropped to filth, whi le Watki ns finished seco nd a nd Po lin g finis hed third. In lhe second molO, Wa tkins captured the win , foil wed by Weaver , R ichards and Poling.
