Amateur Supercross
By Tony Alessi
LOS Al\'GELES, CA, JUNE23
rant Gaspar clin ched the overa ll
series cha mpions hips in both the
125 and 250cc Novice classes at
the fifth and fina l round of the GFI
Amateur Supercross Series, held insid e;
the Los Angeles Coliseum.
T he last tim e an amateur supercross
event was held in the Col iseu m was
in 19i9. For the return of ama teur
supercross insi de the Coliseum over
500 riders took to th e track th at
co ns isted of double jumps, tabl etops,
a peristyle sectio n and a few sectio ns
of tough roc kers. Facto ry contingency
was up for grabs from U.S. Suzuki and
American Honda, givi ng man y ri ders
extra incentive to do well.
When the 250cc Novice clas s kicked
oH, the first rid er up the peristyle was
G aspar , aboard his Ray Sommobacked Suzuki. J ames DeRidder
quickl y moved into second, and used
vari ou s lin es in hopes of closing on
Gaspar. Gaspar stayed smooth and
co ntrolled and held a three-bik e length
adva ntage for the remainder of the
moto. DeRidder fin ished second, but
was almost passed o n the last lap by
Robert Kong, who moved from out o f
the to p 10 to finish th ird.
In mo to two Gaspar aga in led the
charge dow n th e g r ue lin g fro n t
stra igh t wit h William McClintock and
Mike Fost er in to w. DeRidder was fifth
at th e start, but quickl y passed bo th
David McCrown and Foster. Gaspar
wa s un der h eavy pressure from
McClintock, and was blocking his way
through many of the obstacles. The
leaders left DeRidder in third, as th eir
battl e cli ma xed on th e fin al lap.
McClintock too k the lead and dashed
to the second mo to win, just inc hes
in front of Gaspar. Ho wever, McCl intock finis hed sixth in the first moto ,
wh ich handed Gaspar the overall wi n
an d the 250cc Nov ice Ama teur Su percross Cha m p ionship.
Gaspa r won a no ther war in the I25cc
Novice class, and captured the overa ll
championship.
E.]. Wright and Gaspar batt led
closely th rough ou t the entire 125cc
Novice first mo to . Gasp ar stalked
Wrig h t, and stu die d h is lin es in
pr eparation for a last lap move. Gaspar
executed the pass , but Wrigh t came
righ t back, an d for ced his way back
into the lead , Gas pa r again tried to
pass, but Wright would have none of
G
it, and held tou gh fo r the first moio
win, Gaspar finished inches behi nd,
foll owed by Steve Moore,
Wr ight aga in push ed h is R&Dbacked Suzuki into th e lead in m or o
two , wi th Gaspar and Moore in to w.
Wright opened a few bike lengths, as
Gaspar and Moore argued over second.
Gaspar go t ta ngled up in the peri style
and dropped out of the top 10. For
. Wright, it was pure relief as he cru ised
to th e rnoto and overa ll win . Moo re
held stro ng for second, fo llo wed by
J ohn Blai r, wh o made a noteworthy
charge from ou t of the top five to fin ish
third. Gaspar man aged to fin ish ninth
in m oto two , which was good enough
to cli nch hi s second championship.
Dam on HuHman topped th e 250cc
Interm ediate class, edging Donal d
Upton and Billy J oe Mercier. HuHman
took it wire-to-wire in the first moto,
keeping his Cycle Engineering-ba cked
Kawasaki pointed in the right direction. Mercier rode aggressive ly in
second, but HuHman was wise to hi s
every move, Huffman won the moto,
ahea d of Mercier and Don ald Upton.
Upton grabbed the holesh ot in the
second moto, with Mercier and Huffman pushi ng from behind. The track
was beginning to get slippery, and
allowed Upton to pull away. Mercier
had hi s hands full , as Hu££m an
hov ered over his every move. Huffman
chose a better lin e and passed Mercier,
th en went a fte r U pto n, wh o had
opened a three-secon d lead . By the
half way mark, Huffman wor ked past
Up to n and into the lead. O nce o u t
fro nt, Huffman sail ed to a n easv
victory over both Upto n and Mercier:
HuHman contin ued his win streak
whe n he scored the first moto win in
th e 125cc Interm edi a te cl a ss over
Mercier and Upton. Mercier ho wever,
had o ther ideas , and aft er jumpin g past
early leader Jesse J ames at the start of
the second moto, turned up the wick
and pulled away from HuHman and
pro rider Chris Young. H uffman had
problems, and dropped o ut of the top
10, whi le Mercier and Young were
engaged in an all-out battle for th e
lead. Up ton, meanwhile. had moved
past James when he bobbled in a rocker
section, and secured second in th e
process. Mercier held Young off u nt il
the fini sh, where Yo ung out-ju mped
Mercier to win by a ha ir. Mercier
earne d th e o verall win , o ver Upton ,
Mike Metzger and J ames.
After a pair of second place finis hes
in th e 125 and 250cc Intermediat e
classes , Upto n fin all y got a taste of
victory. Upto n won the 125cc Yout h
class with a pair of undisp u ted wins.
Lex Malan and E.]. Wright battled in
bo th motos , with Malan getting the
nod fo r ·second. Steve Cox turned in
a fo urt h pl ace fin ish.
Mat Bateman and Cameron Steele
duked it o u t in bo th 250cc Novi ce
mo tos.
.
' 'I' m riding m yoid bike," sa id
Bateman. " After Mammoth, I'm going
to race in Europe, so m y race bike is
o n th e way o ver there right now. This
bike just isn't as com pe titive."
Steele went on to a pair of wins over
Bateman and Lou Sot o,
.
Robert Kon g to pped longt im e rival
Dan iel Bush , in the 25-29 No vice
division one. Bush took the win in th e
first m oto after bei ng for ced a t the last
minute to change bikes. _
" My 250 blew up in pra ctice.r so I
had to ride a 125" sa id Bush .
Bush rode hard , and edged Kon g for
the first mot o win.
.
" I used to race Ascot a number of
years ago, and Bush would a lway s
wi n, " sai d Kong, now a Florida
resident. "The next m o to is mine. "
Kong's words became a rea lit y as he
sto rmed away with the second m oto
wi n over J ay Spear and T odd Gould, fN
