After ru nn in g in second duri ng day o ne, King dropped to fourth. " I had a reall y terrible terrain test," said King, " I cras hed four times and that put me o ut of the hunt in the class." A ferociou s battle began earl y on as Hawkins caugh t Kin g, wh o shu t down his every passing attem pt. Hawk ins made a determ in ed move and grabbed the lead as the pair blasted th rough a corner. Several sho rt strai g hts la ter H awk ins hit a ditch WFO and did a f1 ying-W a long the trackside ribb o n. Dozen s of spectators ran everywhere as he caree ned wildl y towards th em . At the very last second befor e taki ng out a large oak tree, H awkins someho w regained con trol and go t back into the race - much to the relief of th e wide-eyed spectator st a n d i ng betw een th e tr ee and H awkins, " I wasn 't rea lly pl anning on that happening," said Hawkins, " It was j ust o ne of those things." Hawkins caught ba ck up to Kin g a nd squea ked by o n the o utside . Neither ride r co uld pull away [rom th e othe r and they finished o n ly two points apart. Hawkins won the class with King rega i ni ng third beh ind J eff Odom. McLaughl in took fourt h ahea d of Ostafin, Mace Col eman and Peter Ruggi ero. Lewis coughed up third to Hatch, and said of hi s weekend , "I was really co ns erva tive o n day o ne, so thi s morning , I decided to pull the cork a little bit and ride a littl e faster. Everyth ing went good until the final moto. I just didn 't ride lik e I should have." Randt won the second 250cc Intent moto to cla im eighth in class, while Bruce Field crossed the finish line next to clinch sixth. Husaberg's Rhoades exp loded to victory in th e Lightweight Fo ur-Strok e mo to and grabbed the class win. Halcomb 's bike didn 't sta rt , bu t wit h rid in g smoothly and sma rt ly worked h is' way u p to third beh ind H arte. Kra u se , Math er s and Bertram ba tt led inte nsely to win the 500cc Intent fina l mot o. Krau se held the lead for a good portion of the race, but Mathers and Bertram man aged to get by and photo finished with the sam e score. Webb found so me difficulty in the fin al mo to after changing hi s rear tir e. " I put the wrong size mou sse tube into my tir e befor e th e moto," said Webb , "and th e tir e just sp un o n th e ri m. I had abso lutely no horsepower! I co u ld bar ely make it up the hills." Dahn ers wo n ihe H ea vyw eight Four-Stroke moto by a good margin over Ril ey. Riding across the fini sh line, Dahn ers gave a celebra tory " h igh Iive" to a buddy an d the n crashed in the mud! R iley took second in the class ah ead of Wilcox. Senior Intents Rick Beckstrom and J ,D.
