Minutes la ter the same th ing h appened to T ea m Suzu ki 's bike giv in g th e lead back to Suzuki II . " I ca me around and rea d th e pi t board which said we were 30 seco nds ahea d and I tho ug h t someo ne had made a mi stake," said a happy Cooley, who fin ished th e race for Team Suzuki II . Hall tri ed his best to reel in Cooley in the fin al minu tes bu t o n ly man aged to get wi thin 20 seconds at the check ered flag. Some of the riders from the lead team felt that Cooley should have been ordered to slow to let the lead team win. Team Captain J o h n Ulrich vetoed the idea , however. "I can 't tell guys who've gone out and busted their butts for six hours to slow down and fini sh second," Ulrich said. " If the championship was on the line that would be another matter, but as it is we're in a co mfo rtable position in the standings at this point. " Jacks gave Cooley a big pat on the back as he pulled victorious into the pits after six hours of rac ing. "That was a great ride!" shouted Jack s. Cooley later said he felt like he had the speed in him all the time but just needed a chance to prove it. Renfro w/ L i ttlejo h n had worked back up to third in the fifth hour before brake problems hit again . In th e closi ng minutes of the race , 23-year racing vetera n Bruce Li nd moved the Hu tchins Racing Yamaha past Ren frow to take third.
