T he last tim e an amateur supercross event was held in the Col iseu m was in 19i9. For the return of ama teur supercross insi de the Coliseum over 500 riders took to th e track th at co ns isted of double jumps, tabl etops, a peristyle sectio n and a few sectio ns of tough roc kers. Facto ry contingency was up for grabs from U.S. Suzuki and American Honda, givi ng man y ri ders extra incentive to do well. When the 250cc Novice clas s kicked oH, the first rid er up the peristyle was G aspar , aboard his Ray Sommobacked Suzuki. J ames DeRidder quickl y moved into second, and used vari ou s lin es in hopes of closing on Gaspar. Gaspar stayed smooth and co ntrolled and held a three-bik e length adva ntage for the remainder of the moto. DeRidder fin ished second, but was almost passed o n the last lap by Robert Kong, who moved from out o f the to p 10 to finish th ird. In mo to two Gaspar aga in led the charge dow n th e g r ue lin g fro n t stra igh t wit h William McClintock and Mike Fost er in to w. DeRidder was fifth at th e start, but quickl y passed bo th David McCrown and Foster. Gaspar wa s un der h eavy pressure from McClintock, and was blocking his way through many of the obstacles. The leaders left DeRidder in third, as th eir battl e cli ma xed on th e fin al lap. McClintock too k the lead and dashed to the second mo to win, just inc hes in front of Gaspar. Ho wever, McCl intock finis hed sixth in the first moto , wh ich handed Gaspar the overall wi n an d the 250cc Nov ice Ama teur Su percross Cha m p ionship. Gaspar man aged to fin ish ninth in m oto two , which was good enough to cli nch hi s second championship. Dam on HuHman topped th e 250cc Interm ediate class, edging Donal d Upton and Billy J oe Mercier. HuHman took it wire-to-wire in the first moto, keeping his Cycle Engineering-ba cked Kawasaki pointed in the right direction. Mercier rode aggressive ly in second, but HuHman was wise to hi s every move, Huffman won the moto, ahea d of Mercier and Don ald Upton. Upton grabbed the holesh ot in the second moto, with Mercier and Huffman pushi ng from behind. The track was beginning to get slippery, and allowed Upton to pull away. Mercier had hi s hands full , as Hu££m an hov ered over his every move. Huffman chose a better lin e and passed Mercier, th en went a fte r U pto n, wh o had opened a three-secon d lead . By the half way mark, Huffman wor ked past Up to n and into the lead. O nce o u t fro nt, Huffman sail ed to a n easv victory over both Upto n and Mercier: HuHman contin ued his win streak whe n he scored the first moto win in th e 125cc Interm edi a te cl a ss over Mercier and Upton. Mercier ho wever, had o ther ideas , and aft er jumpin g past early leader Jesse J ames at the start of the second moto, turned up the wick and pulled away from HuHman and pro rider Chris Young. H uffman had problems, and dropped o ut of the top 10, whi le Mercier and Young were engaged in an all-out battle for th e lead. Up ton, meanwhile. had moved past James when he bobbled in a rocker section, and secured second in th e process.
