On the first loop each da y th e riders challe n ged a brief grass track and a fast terrain test. After completion of th e co urse on day two , the intent riders were paraded to the final motocr oss, which was held in a wide, grassy meadow criss -crossed by swa m py dit ches. Scoring for special tests at th is event is performced on a metr ic ratio ba sis, with each 60 seconds eq uall ing 100 points. Wh ile the cl ub used primarily trail for th e ro u te, 35 straigh t hours of rai n preceding the event, forced the club to rerou te lar ge sections of the course o nto roads to minimize the event's im pa ct to the area. This sensitivity to ' the env iro nment was underlined by the Trask Mountain Mz'C's request that riders co ns ide r other areas to ri de during the rest of the year in order to preserve future runnings of the event. . " I put on a heavier flywh eel for the race and it reall y made a differen ce in the slime ," H at ch said. Only six seconds behind H ough , Roeseler and KTM 's Jimmy Lewis scored matching times. Wash in gton 's David Rhodes thu m ped to fas test Lightweight Four-Stroke time on his 350cc Husaberg , whi le Ja son Dah ners thundered th rough the grass as the fastest Heavy weigh t Fo urStro ke. O nly four points off Dahner's pace, Sco tt Sum mers had crashe d, dropped a bu nc h of ti me , a n d remarked, " T he tests are j us t so sho rt , . if you ma ke a mista ke, your' re dead." With identical scores from the grass track , T eam Suzuki riders Ra n d y Hawkins and Dave Bertram led bo th th e 125 and 500 cc Intent classes, resp ectively. J ohn King was only two seconds off of Hawkins ' time, while Kawasaki's Pa ul Kra use held down second 500cc Int ent . The Senior Intent clas s ha s been one of th e most consistent classes throughout th e series , and th e class emerged from this test in a tight, 12 po int spread. Riding with two bust ed rib s and a cracked hip, Gary Doerr posted the fastest tim e with Dave Bow ers on ly two points slo wer. Times were not set too tight, and rid ers had eno ug h tim e for the essen tial s at th e chec ks. Dropped route points were few and far be tween. Shawn Hybarger dropped two minu tes wh en he mis sed the grass trac k. The 500cc Inten t rid er filed a p rotest , alleging tha t a course officia l was not pr esent to direct tra ffic that sho u ld have been there. The club disallowed' th e protest, bu t.Hybar ger will pers ist, exp la ining that the points " co u ld make the differen ce for me making the team." KTM 250 ' rider Alan R and t dropped a minute because of a flat tire. Later in the first loop, the riders attacked th e terrain test.
