With Lew is ou t o f th e pi cture, all eyes were focu sed o n Lamson a nd Emig. By th e halfway point , Lamson enjoyed ab out a three-second lead o n Emi g and a p peared to have th e race in the bag. But two laps from th e fini sh, Em ig pulled o ut th e stops and was qui ckl y breathing down Lamson 's back. H eading ·into th e last lap, La mson a nd Emi g used diffe rent lines through th e double· lan e sectio n th rough th e Peri style, and wh ere the two se<;1ions o f th e co urse merged , it was Em ig corni ng o u t a hea d. Lam son tried 10 reta ke the lead du ring th e rema inin g half la p bu t to no avail, as Em ig scored th e narrow win. "I had a pr etty good start and worked my way into second," said Emig. "I clos ed in on Lamson , but 1 slid out a littl e bit and 1 thought, ' Ma n, this is it , he's (La mso n) goi ng to win it.' But then f pu lled right up on him ; it kind of happen ed real quick and 1 j us t flow ed with it. 1 di dn 't rea lly rea lize it was th e last lap ! It just happen ed so fast. We to o k diff erent lines in th e double lane sections both were kind o f even - a nd 1 ca rne o ut o n top a nd heard th e cro wd go ing crazy." . An obvious ly dejected La mso n sa id, " I blew it. It was stupid, I shou ld 've had it (the win)." East/West Coast 125cc Shooto u t Once again , Em ig was in th e spotli ght during th e East/West Coa st Shooio u t. The factory-backed Yam ah a rider grabbed th e holeshot a head of Jimmy Bu tton , Eric McLear , Buddy Antu n ez, La mso n a n d Ea st Coas t Champion Br ian Sw i n k. J e rem y McGrath, wh o cli nc hed th e West Coast titl e at the San J ose Su percross, did not co m pe te due to a leg inj ury. While Emi g exte nded hi s lead over Button , th e rider to wa tch was Swi n k, wh o wo rked hi s way ·u p to fo urth by th e m idw a y poin t. After a br ief battl e wit h Antunez, Swi nk slipped in to third a nd bega n pressuring Button . Four laps la ter, Button became Swin k's next vict im a nd once int o seco nd, Swink fo u nd him self ab out four seconds behind th e lead er, Emig, with j ust five la ps rema ining. Swink fou nd the hOI line over a stair- step jump a nd was gaining noti cably o n Emi g through that sectio n. By th e white-flag lap, Swink was breathing down Ernig 's neck a nd ac tua lly pulled alo ngside him over th e sta ir-s tep j u m p. But Swi n k co uld n't ge t th e extra d rive he needed to pa ss Em ig over th e next sectio n of do u ble a nd tri ple j umps, a nd Emig held o n for anot he r nar ro w victory. Butto n finis hed a dista nt third a head of Ant unez, whi le Mich ael Craig was fift h. " 1 realized somebody was bac k the re," said Emig. "but 1 kind of relaxed, thi nk ing he would fall back, but he (Swin k) carne back strong a t the end.) wasn't reall y expecting h im to catch u p to me, but when he did , it really go t my hea rt pumping." "I was j us t a littl e cold a t th e sta rt ," said Swi n k. " I fina lly warmed up, but by the time 1got into seco nd, he (Em ig) was just too far out in front. " .
