Althou gh th e suspens io n is exceptional on th e open hi ghway, it's a little too soft for spirited rid es o n tight a nd twist y road s. T he GSX ca n handle the twis ties, a lt houg h its a bit of a handfu l. Its sheer weight makes it har der to lean , plus its lo ng wh eelb ase doesn 't make for a sharp-tu rner. In fact, slo w-speed turns can even be a chore si nce th e fron t end feels very heavy below 30 mph. Hard braking with th e dual-disc front brake also uses up nearly all of the front wh eel travel , and loading th e bik e down with a fairing, detachable luggage-style saddlebags or any of the other accessories offered by Suzu ki wo ul d furth er tax th e suspension. Bu t th e GSX was designed wi th ride r comfort in mi nd, a nd the suspension p rovides a comfortable ride in almost every si t ua tio n. S uzuki engi neers care fu lly tested th e riding position to add to th at co mfort. The rub berpadded "foot pegs a nd high-rise handlebars ar e positioned to produce just the right kn ee and back angle to ensure a comfortabl e rid e over severa l hours. Combined with a well-padded seat, we found th e GSX to provid e exce lle nt comfort. Suzuki was o ne of th e leaders of th e movement back to producing nonspecialized motorcycl es wh en th ey introduced th e GS500E a few yea rs ago , followed by th eir VX800 last year. Now that a return to sta nda rds has become common, Suzuki has upped' th e sta nd ard with the big -bore GSX that has plenty o f sm ooth power and unsurpassed co m fort .
