Capirossi ex tended his titl e lead to 114 points (89 net ) over G resini - 108 (91), Wa ld ma n n - 83 (67), a nd Veda 70 (70). The GP of Europe marked th e probabl e en d o f GP debutant Nob oru Veda' s fa iry tal e progress fr om nowhere to th e World Championship. Back from his Italian G P injury, the yo u n g Japanese H o nda rider wa s a mo ng th e leaders yet again. Then he crashe d on lap 21, for a second time this season , and hi s th ird zero-points sco re. You ca n dis card two bad score s, but not three. By that time, however , defendi ng cha m p ion Loris Capirossi a nd h is Honda had alrea dy started to brea k away from a tigh t five-stron g group disputing the lead , to claim h is seco nd victory this year. Derbi's Ezio Gianola had qualified on pole, wi th Euda s econd , Ra lph Wa ldmann hird, Capirossi fourth and Peter Oeul 's Rotax fifth. J orge Martinez led row two in his second H o nda race. Fro m the start, Capirossi, Gresini, Wal dmann and Veda brok e away , with Gianola chasing ha rd to join up, but crashing on the second lap. The lead went back and forth betw een the two Ita lia ns, the others glued on behind, until by half-distance there were seven in th e leading group, with the original quartet joined by Oettl , H erri T o rronteg u i a n d Martinez. It was still a nybody's race, wi th Veda taking the lead for the first time o n lap 14, and hol d ing it for three laps. Capirossi moved back from fourth to first on th e 18th lap, starti ng a sustained fin ishing sprint that soon ca rried him clear of the group a t more than ha lf-a-second a lap so that by the finish he could cruise, waving a nd hoisting the front wh eel , and still win by five-and-a-half seconds.
