Last year's winner Tim Norton had his front fork £all apart but still finished sixth. two a bou t the woo ds and j umped all the way up to third overa ll before the rains began to fa ll on th e th ird lap. At that tim e Hyde was 11 min u tes' down on the fleeing Sum mers , bu t j ust two minutes o H of Conner 's pace. Norton was riding with H yde for th e better part of two hou rs a nd .was beginning to m a ke prog res s o n Conner's position befor e the bottom fell o ut of his forks. " I had just ca ugh t Hyd e at the river crossing when it went," said Norton of his mech anical failure. "We were dicing back and forth and th en I thought I blew a wh eel bearing. About a mile later m y bars pitched to the left and I looked down and my left fork looked lik e a twisted pretzel." As Hyde sped aw ay towards an even tual th ird-pl ace o vera ll fin ish Norton pl odded o n with o ne fork towards the checkered flag. His last lap . would take nearly two hours and both Blackwell and Cunningham would pass him within three miles of th e finish lin e. Nort on still won the 200cc A cla ss a head of n inth-place overall finisher Craig J ones and Kawasakimounted JeH Fredette, wh o was celebrating the 10th ann iversary of his own Blackw ater 100 over all win. Summers acce p ted th e chec kered flag six minutes ahead of Conner. " It was just a perfect day for me ," said Summers of his first Blackwater 100 overall victory . "M y mechanic Fred Bramblett and Honda 's Eric Crippa did a fantasti c job of keeping tim es on everyone else and letting me know where I stood. I cou ldn't have done it without them. " . Conner was happy with what turned out to be his fourth runner-up fin ish in seven series races: "This is the best finish I've ever had here. The co urse was fairly easy but that rain sure changed things around. After Scott went by me I had to hope for a little luck to win but he rode well , made no mistakes, and the bad lu ck never happened. Still , th is helps solid ify m y place at the top of the standings and now I can conce n trate on winning some races instead of always getting second." Con ner was foll owed in the final 250cc A class sta ndi ngs by teammates Blackwell and Cun n ing ham . KTM 's Ru ssell finished fourt h in the cla ss ahea d of ano ther Kaw asaki rid er, Lee Helliwell. H yde would fin ish 15 m inutes o rr of Russell 's runner-up pa ce but still claimed the Open A class victory ahea d of a KTM parad e. Steve McSwain , an ea rly overall co nt ender, was seco nd with Paul Lemon, Michael McHale and Tony Van et rounding ou t the top five. T ommy Harris was th e top Vet A pilot of the day. The Yamaha rid er fin ish ed an ex tr ao rd ina ry seven th overa ll while on his way to winning the clas s by 13 minutes. JeH Murgel (12th overall ) and Rick Kresic (13th) foll owed in the class standings. Mik e La gomarsino to pped th e Junior class by almost 20 minutes. Series conte nder J ohn Vincent fini shed second with David Molnar third. Yamaha rid er J oe Lojak finished 3 1st o vera ll o n his way to the Sen ior A (+40) victory . Undefeated in th e di vision so far th is season, Loj ak was the on ly rider in th e group to register all four laps. The Super Senior A cla ss winner was Dave Coombs.
