Fish nabs Slate Mountain Trials
By A.S, Hanson
DELTA,PA,MAY 19
The 5th An n ual Slate Mountain T rial proved
to be a mo re challe nging even t than th e
previo us year 's trial, but was eviden tly to th e
liking of a grou p of trials riders ha iling from
nearby Lancaster County. The four regular
ridi ng bu dd ies wh o practice weekl y in the
rock y ledges of th e Pequea Creek area took
three cla ss win s. and a fifth place rrophy.
Vetera n of the gro u p is Expert class winner
Cra ig Fish, with Dan HOrlo n takin/: the
Adva nced class and Bryan Kimmet rol h ng to
a very co nvin cing win in the Interm edia te
class. Kevin Mowrer held up his end by
placing fifth in a very competitive Novice
class.
The riders go t a taste of what lay in store
for them early in section o ne, aptly named
Up, U p and Away" , A near 1()()1; cli mb up
a virgin hillsid e provided the main obstacle
for al l rider classes, with varying degrees of
difficulty in th e a pproach depending upon
ski ll level. First loop scores were all fives as
riders searched for traction in vain. Thus. the
(ront·running co mpe titors in the Expert class
all cam e into sectio n two with identical scores.
Fish and Distri ct 6 reigning champ Gary
Sampsel both posted zeros, while AMAID-6
number two rider T erry Anselmo erred with
a big five whi ch wo uld keep him just out of
the lead range for the remainder of the day.
Anselmo regained some gr ound on th e loose
sha le of section three - Ca nyon Ridge - by
dr opping only three to the solid fives of Fish
and Sampsel, but Fish pulled o u t som e
breathing room by negotiating the slick offcamber of "The Ru ins " of section four with
but a single da b. A brill iant first loop clean
o n th e tigh t rock slab array of section five
" Rock Gard en " by Fish served notice 10 th e

Sampsel made a serious a nd daring run back

" Gaonim o l" Wh ile o thers o pted for the steep,

took th e di rect approa ch o ver the exposed tree
roo ts on the left and leapt off into mida ir,
wheels not touchin g the gr ound until he had
descended some 15 feet of the 35-foo t dr op.
Had he cleaned th e o pe ning part of the
sectio n, it would have gained him some
ground on the lead er, but both he an d Fish .
emerged with identical threes. The ~p closed
