to go on, but I had a hard time breathing, so I decided to call it a day. It's too bad . too. I finished second last weekend at Buckhannon, so I figured I was on the comeback trail after my injury (a hyperextended knee) in April." Conner's Kawasaki bega n ru nning fou l as wel l. According to Team Green wrenc h Greg Quador , " When Du ane wen t by on the next-to -la st lap, he was shaking hi s head and h is engine di dn't sound very healthy. Soon aft er that, th e bike seized up solid and was full of san d." Conner sa id, "The bike ran beau tifu lly until ab out the end of the fifth lap , when it began to lose po wer. I tried to nurse it home but to no avail. I thought we had an excellent shot at the overall." After the misfortunes of both Conner and Pl essinger, Summers moved back in to the lead on lap seven , which he wou ld hold comfortably to the end. "At about the midpoint of the race ," said Summers, "I was only 35 seconds down on Duane and Scott (P lessinger), so I feel I could've reeled them in who knows? It could've been a reall y interesting race. Anyway, I'll take the win either way. With the win and Duane's misfortunes, I've got a pretty substantial points lead now. I' ve got three wins, a second and third. It feels pretty good to have suc h a good po in ts lead. Since my luck hasn 't been so good in the Grand National Cross Country Series, I'm going to sta rt concen trating on that series now." Cunningham also took advantage of Plessinger's and Conner's mi sfortune and settled into second overall. " I just tried to stay consta nt ," said Cunningham, who is seeking h is first National Hare Scrambles win of th e season. " I fell on th e first lap when I tried to avoid Summers' cra sh. When I got going again , I realized that I wasn't going to ca tch the leaders, so I just cruised around hoping for a mistake by th e leaders. I need som e good finishes because I'm not doing too well in this series." Ben nett crossed the finish line in third close behind Cunningham. "I've never pa ssed so many riders in one event," sa id Benn ett . " T he thumper (H onda XR600 ) was a blast to ride , but if I kn ew abo u t all th e sand earlier, I probably wou ld 've brought my CR instead. The dust was a little bit of a problem , but everyone had to deal with it , so all in a ll. it was a good fun ride. I hope the m omentum continues in th e National Enduro Series." Fourth overall finisher Lojak said , " I crashed hard over some roots. I didn't know where I was for a second or two, so I just sat there to shake the cobwebs out and rega in my composure. The bik e got to be a little bi t of a handful to con tro l because of th e deep sand. I'm happy to ha ve finished at all , so I'll take fourth , no p robl em." Last year 's Black water 100 win ner Tom Norton had a heartbreak rid e, as he screamed his factory-backed KTM 125 into secon d place on the last lap. Unfortunately for Norton. though, h is chain guide broke, which led to h im being sidelined. "I went through the barrels on the last lap," said Norton. " I had second sewn u p, bu t the chain guide fell off, wh ich caused my chain to twist all up in the motor. I'm disappointed, but not for myself , but for a 11 my friends wh o ch eered me on all around the course." m Results 0 / A: I. Scoll Su mmers (Hon ); 2. Terry Conningham (J(.aw); S.
