By the second lap , Crull and Ri tch ey had o pened u p a healthy lead in their battle for firs t, Ri tchey tried repea tedl y to stu ff under Crull in th e hairpins , on ly to have the door slam med sh ut by the vetera n. On the las t lap, Ri tch ey ma de a desperation move under Crull in the final turn. He came up inches short and had to settl e for second Third wen t to Aar on Roger s who had come th rou gh th e pa ck after starting near ly las t, Crull an d Ri tchey picked u p in the second mo to where they had left o rr. N, the two riders roared do wn the starting straight, Crull drifted wid e an d took o ut Ritchey's fro nt wheel. While Crull reco vered from th e co ntact, Ri tchey was sent flying into th e hay hales. With his closest co mpetition go ne, Crull p ut it on cruise-control ahea d of J im Fergu son and La nce Sellars. On the th ird lap , Crull lost concentration and cras hed By the time he had remou nted, he was back in fourth wi th only four laps remaining on th e short stadium trac k. Crull retoo k the lead in th e nex t tum and went on for th e win . Ferguson fin ished secon d, wit h Sellars in th ird. In th e Pro race, Lowell Moural Sr. too k th e holesh ot ahea d of h is son, Lowell Moural j r., and T im Nobles. By the end of th e first lap, Mo ural Jr. had tak en the lead with Nobles mov ing up to challenge Moural Sr. for second. For th e next six laps, Moural Sr. and Nobles fou ght for position . With ju st two laps left, Mo ural Sr. seemed to tire and gave u p seco nd to Nobles. Moural Jr. scored th e wi n. Moural Jr. roosted away from th e field a t th e start o r th e seco nd rno to, with his father clos e behind. Nob les fell on th e fir st lap and rem ounted in last place. But by th e fifth lap , Nobles had mo ved back up to th ird and positioned.h im self on Moural Sr.' s rear fend.er. - The two n ders ba nged o n each o ther co n u nuo usly without either giving ground On the last lap , Nob les was able lo put a block pass on Moural Sr. and snatched second p lace by inch es. This du o was never more than a wheel apa rt the rest of the way, wh ile Eric Brou hard wai ted in third for a mi stak e by the leaders tha t never came. The 250cc and Open Amateur classes were combined with the big bik es starting fro m the penalty lin e. The crowd favorite Elizabeth Kanter didn 't d isap point. She worked her way to the fro nt and won her heat race. Todd Zieberth, however, had a han dle on things in the fin a l a nd wo n go in g away. Action in the 250cc MX class saw Dom Peterson ru n away fro m the competit io n. Kevin Erickson an d Rob Redmann fought for second, with Erickson getting the nod. Dom Peterson too k h is Yamaha WR250 to the O pen MX class and won a hea t race. The second mote of the 30+ A cla ss, was combined with 30+ B and C and 250cc. B classes. On the restart, feat uring Ha m son turned backward s, Jay Ha yes cl aimed the fro nt position and roa red around th e first tum. The event was marred by pol iti cs and wha t Race Directo r Phil Auernheirner described as "eco- terr orism ". After a long and difficult battle with a vocal a nd well o rga nized group of preservation ists wh o vehe men tly o pposed off-road activi ty in the Prescott Nat ional Forest. Auem heimer finally wo n th e special permit he need ed fro m th e U.S. Fores t Service to hold hi s race. But ap paren tly th ose wh o opposed the race decided to ta ke matters in to their own han ds a nd set booby-tra ps, cha nged course mar kin gs a nd threw rocks at passm g racers. The local Sher iff's Department and even a heli copter pa tro lled th e co urse. Severa l racers encoun tered th e terror ists tra ps and Colby T urne r was injured wh en he cras hed int o a log blocki ng the tra il wh ile bei ng pelted wi th rocks. . Ken Kozlik scored fourth o vera ll in a race he described as horrible a t 26.07 mph. Kozlik battl ed not on ly th e very rock y and ro ug h Prescott co urse, bu t also a stomach virus which mad e him sick during the wh o le last lap . Lucero lands Speedway USA win By Scott Daloisio VICTORV IJ.J.E, CA, M II AY For th e second week in a row , Steve Lu cero defeated a tri o of Ru ssell Racing riders to win th e Scratch main a t Mike Sull ivan's Speedway USA. . Leaping o rr th e pole o n th e start, Lucero edged Mik e Faria , Scott Brant and Gary Hi cks into th e first turn. Brant took his GM to the: low side of th e trac k on lap two and tried to tak e away the second spot sin ce Faria gave h im th e inside of the track as he went to the o utside to try and pa ss leader Lucero. At th e halfway point. Faria and Lucero were dead even. As they exi ted th e second tum on th e th ird revolution, Faria inched ahead By the time th ey slid in to the third turn, Lucero was ba ck in first, Wh en th ey took th e wh ite flag , Lucero, on the Sh oeilRacecrafterslTearn Scopeliu e/Oaklev Goggles/Oilzall Westlake held a slim lead . Fari a stayed on th e wide lin e through tum three an d in turn four , he decided to ta ke o ne last sho t a t Lucero . Faria dr ove down lo th e po le, hoping to catch Lucero off guard It didn 't work and Lucero bagged his seco nd Speedway USA win in a row as Faria had to settle ror second place. Third went to Brant with Hi cks in the: four th spot. In th e H andicap ma in, World Indoor Ice Ra cing Cha mpio n Charl ie Vene gas led wire to wi re. From the 30-ya rd- li ne, Ven egas assumed co mmand as soo n as th e tapes went up. Steve Furman was second with Bran t third. The way Brant was flyin g on the night, everyo ne figured th e ma in was his. T hat hunch receiv ed furthe r bolstering when Furman parked in turn two on the second lap and Brant blew by befor e Furman could recover. Wh en the seco nd lap en ded, Far ia got pas t Furman for th ird. O ne lap la ter , at the hal£way po in t, Venegas led with Brant second and Faria th ird. Venegas' advantage was two len g th s, the same he had when Brant too k seco nd from Furman. Bra n t was no t getting a ny closer to Ven ega s. bu t he was getti ng closer lo Fari a and he had to start wat chi ng his flan k. For th e rest of the wa y, Bran d co uldn' t move in close: enough fOT a strong challe nge. MAY 25 Shaun Kalos sco red a pa ir or moto victo rie:s in the co mbined Pro cl ass d uring the G FI Super Saturday m otocross a t P err i s Raceway. ·BilI y Frank led the start of th e fir st molO wi th Bri an Manley, Kal os and Mik e Beier i n · tow . Frank, Manley a nd Kalos began a three-way battle for th e lead while Beier fell off th e pace a nd drifted ba ck. Kalos clipped a tire on the rourth lap a nd lost ab out five seco nds . With th e head from Kalos gone, Manley wa s able to focus on leader Frank and the Ra ce Tech teammates battled for the ne xt two laps with Manley.try ing every thing to get by Frank. Kalos, meanwhile, was closing rapidly. When the race reach ed the halfway point, Kalos turned up th e wick and blasted by Manley on the downhill, then knifed under Frank for the lead Once out front Kalas crept away to th e moto win.
