Now in its 21st year, th e event has bec om e o ne o f the la rge st no n National events in th e 'co u nt ry, an d this year raised $30,000 for local Miam i Vall ey cha ritie s. Five-time even t winner Steve Mor ehead was th e fast est in qualifying, . posting a 25.117-second lap time that . bested the track reco rd ' of 25.899 seconds, set by Gar y Scott in 1983. " T ha t was bugging me for a long time, " said .Mor ehead. "The track is no better, we're just going faster." Rusty Rogers was fastest off the line in the first heat race , and led Morehead, Darrin Eri chsen and Larry Pegram through the first turn, Morehead sto le the lead from Rogers as they exited turn fo ur and went on un challenged for the remainder of the race. Rogers fended off th e charges , of Erichsen, whi le Peg ram looked for a way to improve his position . Morehead greeted the checkered flag , in first , follo wed by Rogers, Eric hsen, Pegram and Brian H ardi n , who scored the las t transfer position. : Roeder dominated the second heat , as he sped off the line and romped away to a n easy wi n. Two-time Grand National Champion R icky Graham fin ished in the' runner-u p spot, while ' Do ug Davis n ip ped Scot t Stump at the G 0 flag to cla im third p lace. Duane Veeder crossed the fin ish lin e in fift h , earning th e fin al tran sfer position. Mor eh ead used the outside po le positi on to gra b the holesho t .at the start of the fin al. Roeder, Rogers, and Gra ham trailed th e Findlay Flyer, but it wasn 't lon g before Roeder made hi s mo ve. At th e hal fway point, Roeder continued to lead , while Morehead fought off the charges of Rogers and Graham. Fifth p lace was up for grabs, as Stump, Veeder, Davi s and Pegram mixed it up. On th e white flag lap, Morehead got into a tank-slapper com ing o ut of turn two , and Rogers scoo ted into second. Roeder scor ed the win, followed by R oger s, Mo reh ea d a n d Gra h am . Stump prevailed in the battle for fifth , whi le Veed er , Pegram, Davi s a nd Hardin ro unded out ,he field. " T h is feels real good," said a happy Roeder. " Especially since I beat Steve. T he fo ur-lap race featured the night's fi ve fastes t qua lifi ers ; Morehead, Roeder, Rogers, Graham and Hardin. Morehead leapt off the line and led from wire-to-wire. Behi nd Morehead, Rogers fough t off the advances of Graham, H ardin and Roeder to the finish line. "This is how we should' ve ha d it set up in the main," said Morehead; "This race has always mea nt a lo t to me, because I rode for Furgie." James Hart grabbed the holeshot in th e J un ior main from the o u tside po le . position, with Georgie P rice in hot pursuit. Hart went a little h igh in turn , tw o ' o n the second "la p and P ri ce scooted into the lead . Once in to th e lead , P rice opened u p his Dor sey Builders/ Bell/D&SCycles/ Pops Sweetan/Mi lls H-D/ -sponsored, J o hnny Goad- tuned Harley, and cruised to th e win . Hart finished second, ahead of , Danny Koelsch and John Reu sso. Rod ney Mashue nabbed the ho leshot in the Pro-Am final , with Brian Strong and Bob Miller sh ado wi ng hi m. With a clear track ahead of h im, Mashue pulled away from the field and established a five-second lead. Mill er fo und h is way pa st Strong, and crossed the fin ish line in secon d p lace.
