eROAD RACE mFarmer wins, DuHamel ~. DQ'd at Brainerd· AMAlCCS 600 and 750(( S uperspo rt_Se_ri_R Ull _ es :_O_d_2 Backrowstart can't stop Russell ,.....; By Paul Carruthers BRAINERD, MN, JUNE 9 om monwealth Honda 's Miguel Du Ham el won on the race track, but lost in post-race tech inspectio n, giving the victory to Two Brothers Racing's Jeff Farmer in a race spoiled by controversy at Brainerd International Raceway. Du Hamel was found guilty of ru nni ng a non-homologated HRC-built header pipe on his Honda CBR600's Vance & H ines exhaust system, and he was consequently stripped of h is win. T hus, Farmer came away from Bra inerd wit h the victory, hi s first of the season after cras hing out of the first round of the series in Daytona. . Second p la ce wen t to Atlan tic Motorsports Group's T om Kipp wi th Van ce & H in es' Jamie James breaking up the H on da CBR600 F2 domina tion by squeezing his Yamaha FZR600 into third place . J ames ' teammate Larry Schwarzbach and impressive newcomer Takanobu Koyama, on the second T\;Vo Brothers Racin g Honda, rounded o ut th e top five finishers. Bu t th e race on the track reall y belonged to DuH amel. The French Canadian won the fastest of th e two five-lap heat races on Saturday, and then went out and won Sunday's main event by over two seconds. It was all for naught , howeve r, when cl ose inspection of the exhaust header pipe revealed that it was not the standard issue Vance & Hines system . " We' re pissed," Two Broth ers Racin g's Kevin Erio n said after the race when it was in itially reported that the AMAlCCS would only levy a fine against DuHam el. "They go t caught cheating. A fine to the fat man doesn 't mean (expleti ve deleted). We were told to take those (the header pi pe) off before Daytona and we took them off. They were chea ting and they're going to buy thei r way ou t of it, It's a clear . performance advantage; it might as well have oval p iston s. It's no t j ust a weight issue. They're factory pipes ma de in J apan." Com monwea lth H onda 's R a y Pl u mb said that th e AMAlCCS's Roger Edmonston told him at Daytona that the pi pe could be used as long as it ca rr ie d the Vance & H in es emblem. The entire issue is sur e to be resol ved at an appeals hearing. The dis q ua lification o£ DuHam el stopped the Canadian's perfect win record, and also dropped him to a tie with Farmer for third in th e championship. J ames takes over the champion sh ip lead with 32 points to Kipp's 30. DuHamel and Farmer are tied with 20 points apiece. The first heat race of the weekend saw Farm er leadin g Kipp a nd DuHam el in itially, with Kipp taking a turn a t leading in the middle stages of th e five-lap race. In the end, tho ugh , it was DuHamel earn ing the win over Kip p and Farmer. Koyama was fourth after getting the best of a duel with fellow T op Expert rider Tripp Nob les. J ames and Commonwealth Honda's Rich Arnaiz battled for the top spo t in the second hea t race with James eventually getti ng the best of the 1990 European Superbike Champion in the £ina l two laps . Schwanbach fin ished third, followed 'by Atlantic Motor- C sports Group's Mich ael Barnes , on a H o nda CRB600 , and Yamahamo unt ed James Leslie. The final was set to be a thriller with at least six riders capab le of running up front. It didn 't d isap po in t, as Farmer led a freight train of Du Ham el, James, Kipp, Arnaiz, and Schwarzbach through the first lap on the 10-turn, 2.986-mile circuit set in Minnesota's lak e coun try. DuHamel took over the lead on the second go-around and except for an off-the-track incident on the thi rd lap, had an unev entful race. "I went off the track on the outside of one and Jeff (Farmer) was on the outside," DuHamel said later. "I didn 't know he was there, but I had no cho ice." The rest stayed with DuHam el u nti l the sixth lap when the Daytona 200 win ner started to open up a lead. At the comp letion of the l2 -lap race he. was almost th ree seconds ahead. The stri fe over second place cam e down to Farmer vs. Arn aiz, but ended 'a lap prematur ely when the front brake locked on Arnaiz' Honda and sent him to the pa vement in turn three. Farm er cruised in for secon d with Kipp doing likewise in third. James was also alone in fourth after ru nning wi th the lead group earl y. The batt le for fifth saw Koyama figh t .back after running off the track in turn one on th e first lap to reel' in Schwarzbach. T he T exan , however, used hi s edge in experience to hold off th e newcomer o n the fina l la p . Koyam a, though, was rewarded for his efforts by fin ishing as the Top Expert, a ca tagory for CCS-Iicensed experts and first-year AMA professionals. (;Jt Results HEAT t : I. BRAINERD, M JUNE 9 N, f Scott Russell were a race horse, they'd fill his saddlebags with lead and appoint Roseanne Barr as his jockey. But wi th the way Russell and his Muz zy Kawasaki ZXR-7 galloped around the 2.976-mile Brainerd International Speed way, it just wouldn 't matter. The Georgian started from the back row o£ the gri d, yet still went on to win h is seco nd strai g h t 750cc Supersport race in ' the red-flag int errupted race. And th is was after a ra ther miserable start to his weekend. First, Russell cras hed one of hi s two 750cc Supersport bikes, and then blew th e second one up during practice on Saturda y morning. T ha n ks to an all-nighter by his crew - Cary Medley, Billy Oliver and Larry Kano, the Kawasaki was put back toge the r again and Russell charged th rough to beat teammate Jacques Guen ette, J r . T o p Expert Tripp Nobles rode hi s Suzuki GSXR750 to a third place finish ah ead of Bob Sandy's Kawasa ki and the GSXR750 of Britt T ur kington. T wo Broth ers Racing's Je ff Farmer was impressive in putting h is Hon da CBR600 F2 into sixth place. Russell extended hi s points lead to eig h t po ints over Guenette, 40-32, after two ro unds with Turkington third at 28 and Nob les fourth with 26. With Russell out of action, the first heat race was dominated by Farmer on a 600. T he Floridian too k over when Mike Moores cras hed his 600 in turn 10 on the second lap, and went on to beat J ason Pri dm ore and hi s Suzuki GSX R750 by 7.241 seconds. Third place we nt to G SXR750-mounted Dean Mizdal. The second heat race saw a battle between Turkington, Nobles and Bue, wit h T urkington taking the win by just.373-of-a-second over Nobles. Turkington's five-lap heat race was som e three seconds quicker than Farmer's. The final was no sooner star ted than it was stopped. Nebraskan David Rosno crashed at the drop of the flag on the start line when he tangled with another rider. The resulti ng debris caused a restart, wh ich was led by Turkington with Nobles in hot pursui t, After two laps Russell was 10th. A lap later he was seven th , the n fifth, th en fourth, then secon d - a n d another red flag. Bue cras hed hard on th e exit of tu rn 10, stopping the race for the second time as Russell had moved th rough the field to move in behind hi s teammate Gu enette. Most of the top riders used the race stoppage to fit new rear tires to their mo torcycles. The second restart saw Turkington again getting the jump on the field. By the second lap , or the eighth overall, Guenette was again leading with Russell in hi s slipstrea m . The Georgia n moved past the Canadian a lap later and cruised in for the win . Guenette, meanwhile , held on for second p lace wi th Nobles shaking off T urking ton, who soo n fell prey to Sandy . . Nobles' effort earned him th e Top . Expert ra nki ng: " Last year we couldn 't even see 'em ,': the Georgian told the estimated 20,000 spectators. "This year we cou ld see 'em." " It was a toug h race," Ru ssell said. "It was hard to get through all those riders. And the n I didn't know if they'd call it after the red flag. In on e and two, you just have to hammer it tha t's where you make time."
