MORRIS, PA, MAYY 25 lorida 's Kevin Foley ba ttled back a tide of you thf u l amateur sta rs when he won the 250cc Expert class at th e T eam Green Sprin g Nationals at H igh Po int Raceway. Fo ley, th e de fen d in g Ama teur Na tional Champion in the J un ior Pl u s 25 class, also topped th e P lu s 25 class at H igh Point . . T he event was he ld on the same course tha t the pro fessiona l riders would tackle the next day in the 15th Ann ual H igh Po in t l25/ 250cc Nation al Cham p ionsh i p MX a n d at tracted 780 entrants. In cluded in the fiel d we re a half-dozen Amateur Na tional champs, plus many ride rs who competed in a two-hour hare scrambles even t that too k place sim u lta neous ly on anoth er p art of th e facili ty. ' ' Foley, a 28-year -old Kawasaki rider backed by Team Green, Fox Racing and Oak ley, challenged 17-year-old Scott Sh eak for the lead at th e beginni n g of the firs t 15-minute 250cc Expe rt mo to. Foley dogged Sheak for three laps before he moved into the lead, then was one of just two riders to na vigate a triple j ump in one bound, a feat matched the next day by on ly a handful of the professional racers, to pull away. Bill y Silverol e was the only other rider to make th e leap, but he couldn't catch Sheak before th e mote's end and finished third ahead of Craig Noack and Davey Yezek. In heat two, Foley grabbed the earl y holeshot but soon had his hands full with 16-year-old Yezek. Realizing hi s overall result would not be altered, Foley did not put up much of a fight as Yezek rode away with th e win. Foley finished second for the overall win while Hayden Richards, another AMA amateur champ, chased Foley and finished third ahead of Silvarole. PJ IIAnswer/Scott/Bell /Dunlopbacked Richards emerged ah ead of a 27-year 125cc Expert group in the first moto. The 17-year-old found h is competition to be Sheak and Yezek. The three pulled away from the pack to finish in the same order .as Noack and New Jersey's Joel Dengler gave chase. At the start of the second moto, Davey Coombs bolted into first and led until the last lap, when the chasing Silvarole pushed past on an offcambered corner. Silvarole went on to win the moto but his first moto l Sth- F p lace finis h ruined his overa ll cha nces. Coombs, wh o ' finis hed ni nt h in the first heat, hung on to second at the fin ish wh ile Mar k Neiderhser cla imed third. Rich ards 'fi n ished fourth to clai m the overall win. Foley's second overall win of the day came in the 37-rider J unior (+25) class, where he took on Davey Coo mbs in the firs t moto and T im Coombs in the second . Foley led the first race from start to fin ish a s Da vey Coo mb s couldn' t keep his 125cc Suzuki close to Foley's Kawasa ki KX250 on the steep H igh Poin t hill s. The second race saw a more even battle as 'H onda CR250 rider Tim Coombs attacked Fol ey early and challenged the Floridian all the wa y to the £lag. Still, Foley held on to win . with Tim Coombs bettering his bro the r for the runnerup prize. Mark Garrison and Ray Niebe l ro u n de d out th e first five overal l. In the Vet A (+30) race, Hond amounted James Kinsley emerged as the overa ll winner wi th a third and a first pl ace finish in the two heats. First moto winner Garrison appeared to be on his way to a second heat win when he cras hed ou t with an unsuccessful try at the uphill triples. Michigan 's David Mack was second overa ll aboard a KX500 wh ile Garrison recovered ' from hi s spill in tim e to clai m third overall. The Open A class leader was West Virginia KTM rid er Todd Baisden, who had little problems with the big leap over the triples aboard his 300cc motorcycle. Baisden won both motos to record the overall with New Jersey's Richard Zupko and Je££rey Bellmer filling in the next two position s. Oklahoma minicycle star Robbie Reynard made the trip to Pennsylvania for his first visit to High Po int but found a surprising reception in the form of 13-year-old Brock Sellards. Reynard, a multi-time champion aboard a Team Green -backed KX80, battled a ll day long with Ohio 's Sellards in Super Mini and 85cc (1213) racing. Fox /Bell/Pj l -backed Reynard won all four of the motos he entered, but each time Sellards put up a tremendous battle. In the first Super Mini moto Sellards led until the last long uphill, wh ere ' Reynard was able to motor past. Bu t in the last corn er Sellards tagged the Kawasaki pilot, dropping both riders to th e dirt. Reynard go t to h is bike first and rolled over the last few ju mps for the win . Sella rds ended up pl acin g second to Reynard in all four motos for a pair of ru nn er-up trop h ies. J. D. ' Collins was thi rd in the 1 2~ 13 group whi le Ch ad Kresge ra n third in th e Super Mini group. The 85cc (14-15) win ner was Cernic's Suzu ki/AXO-backed H eikki Yeage r, who posted a pair of moto wins. Kresge sh owed a 3-2 score for second overa ll wh ile Illinois ' J oey Bardoner ran 4-3 for thi rd. In the 85cc (7-11) class, Georgi a's Robbie Horton p iloted his Sco tt/ Bell / R en th a llT su bak ilB a rr 's Co mp.backed Kawa saki to a p ai r of moto win s. Ohio's Mark Burkh art finish ed second overall with a 2-3 ta lly, wh ile Michigan's C h ris Considi ne was third . Burkhart and Co nsidine returned to p u t on a tremendous 65cc ba ttle later in the program. The young du o were jump ing ma ny of the bigger obstacles that gave 125cc Amateur class riders fits. T he two trad ed moto wins with Burk hart emergi ng as th e overa ll wi nner on the heels of hi s second moto victory . Third in the division went to Scott McMillin. T eam Green 's Greg Rand pulled o££ a two-rno to swee p in the h ig h l y competitive 125cc School boy (12-15) race. Rand led Chris Brown to the checkered £lag in bot h mo tos whi le Keith T rocco li foll owed them in th ird. Rand also competed in the 125cc B class but with ou t the su cces s h e rea lized in the Sch oo lboy race. Oh io's J osh ua Steel swep t both motos of the fi rst 125cc B d ivision wi th Rand tra iling in second bo th tim es ou t. H onda-mounted Eric Arlet ra n th ird in the grou p. In the second division, it was New York 's T roccoli who led bo th mo tos at the fin ish. Adam Merrick an d J ohnny Walker ran second and third in th e class.
