a lonely second ahead of Pegram, Hale and Brian Atherton. On the last lap, Rogers slid off the groove and nearly lost second to a hard-charging Pegram , bu t Rogers managed to hold on. Simms scored the win and qualified for his firs t-ever Natio nal final , ahead of Rogers and Pegram. " T his is awesome," said a happy Simms. "I didn 't think I'd make a final this soon. I th ough t I' d make a mile fina l firs t. This is my first time on a big bike; we geared it for the cushion, but it rea lly worked on the bottom. " scored th e win in convincing fash ion , ahead of Parker, Carr, Rogers, R oeder and Durelle. " I can 't bel ieve Roeder did n 't choose the groove," said Graham . wh o was presented with a $10,000 check for his effort. " Th is is my first tim e back .a t this track in three years. The last time I was here I was disqualified from the Challenge, so I think I deserved th is on e. We're back to the old style chassis and it wor ks a lot better than the 'high boy' one we use on the mi les." Camel Challenge Carr occupied the inside po le for th e start of the 20-lap National , and was joined on the front row by Ath erton, Graham, Spri ngsteen, Roeder and Parker. More head, Aselti ne, Herndon, Simms, Jones and Rogers made up row two , wh ile Poovey , P eg ra m and Durelle sat on ro w three . . Parker was fastest at the flash of the green ligh t, and led the field into turn o ne. Moreh ead ma de the most of his seco nd row sta rt i n g posi tion a nd trailed Parker through turn one. " I just held it wide open and it jumped up there," said Moreh ead. Grah am got awa y in third, ahead of Carr and Ath erton. Atherton rode the cus hio n arid dropped off the pace, as Roeder had first pick of the starting spots, and chose to start near th e o u tsid e. Grah am was next, and set his Honda in the m iddle of the well developed groove. Rogers occupied the . inside po le, next to Graham, whi le Parker sat on Graham 's right: Durelle chose to sta rt between Parker an d Roeder, wh ile Carr sat o n the outside pole for the five lap das h for cash. At the wink of the light, Graham used the trac tion of the groove and left th e o ther five ride rs beh ind. Rogers led Parker, Carr and Roeder in the chase for Graham. Parker and Carr forced their way past Rogers and set out after Graham, but to no avail. Graham National Parker one win awaY- _ "I f you had asked m e three years ago, ' Hey Scouv.how 'bou t beating Springer's , record of 40 wins? ' " said Scott Parker befor e the Louisvill e Half Mile National. " I would have laughed in your face and said, 'Yeah, right!' It 's hard to believ e that I'm in the position of doing just that. " Par ker's third career win at Louisville ha s bumped hi s number of Nation al wins to 40, and he is now tied with fellow three-ti me Grand National Champio n Jay Springsteen for first on the all-time win list. Springsteen scored his 40th win in the 1985 Syracuse Mile. Like Springsteen, who is still acti ve, Park er has scored all his Grand National Championship wins in dirt trac k races. Bubba Sho bert is third on the all-time win list with a to tal of 38 victories, 33 of whi ch came in dirt track races and five in road race events between 1982 and 1988. Kenn y Roberts is fourth with 33 victories, logging 18 road race win s and 15 dirt track wins between 1972 and 1984. Bart Mark el is fifth , hav ing scored all 28 of hi s wins in dirt track events between 1960 and 1971. Springsteen ran sixth on the initial lap, with J ones, Herndon and Roeder in tow . Moreh ead closed on Parker and bega n to pressure th e defending Grand National Ch ampion, whi le Carr brok e free of Grah am . Onlap 10, the halfway mark, Carr clo sed on Morehead and sn uck un der the Findlay Flyer to take over second in turns thr ee and [our and set his sights on the leader. Meanwhile, J ones worked o n Graham for fourth, with Springsteen and Poovey in their wake. Graham slipped off the groove in turns one and two and handed fourth to J ones, wh o p oun ced a t th e o p p o rt u n i ty to advance. Up front, Carr closed the gap on Parker, bu t was never a serious threat a nd Parker scored the win a head of hi s teammate, More head , and Jones. " I wa s wo rrying about my ow n race," said Parker. " 1£ so meone was go n napass me, they were gonna have to do it on the ou tside." "I was tryi ng to get below the groove to pass Scouy,' said Carr. "Bu t he didn't make any mistak es, and I didn't get any cha nces," " I' m ha ppy wi th th ird place," said Morehead . " Bu t th e darn thing was sli p ping time aga in . It just feels lik e it' s tyin g up. " As Parker took to the track for hi s victory lap, the three-time G rand National Champi on went hi gh in the cus hion and lost control. The over 10,000 spec ta tors on hand wen t wild, as Parker picked up hi s mach ine and rod e it back to the pod ium. " I was going to go ' up in the loose stuff and cros s it up," laughed Parker. " Bu t there was no tire left and I los t it'" With II races left in th e 1991 seaso n, it seems probabl e th at Parker will add to hi s li st of wins, an d tak e sol e po ssession of first o n the all-time win list. " I tal ked to Bart Mar kel (fifth o n the all-time win list with 28), and we decided that we'll be happy as long as the titl e stays in the 'Michigan Mafia '," said Springsteen, who joined Parker in sig ning autographs after the winner's circle ceremo nies. " I tuned all of Jay's (wins) but four, . and all of Scotty's but six ," said tuner Bill Werner, wh o has prepared bikes for 70 of the 80 wins th at Springs teen and Parker sha re. " I am rea lly thankfu l for the rare opportuni ty to wor k for the two greatest guys in the sport, they 're really awesome and they make me look like a hero. I'd rea lly like to see the two trade the lead back and forth and up the ante.
