eROADRACE e W Championship Road Race Series: Round 6 orld (Left to right) Spaniard Carlos Cardus, German Helmut Brad l an d Dutchman Wi lco Zeelenberg celebrate their top three finish es in the Germ an 250cc GP. H elmut Bradl scored a popular wi n in hi s home GP at Hocken heim. with the wh"ole gr o up was covered by 1.5 seconds. Schmid had been well ahea d of this group befor e an excursion o nto th e grass, and the German 's charge back from behind was a feature of the race , Event ua l victor Sh im izu , ' however, bid ed his tim e, then used hi s works machine's tum of speed to prevai l in th e clo sing laps. Cadalora retained his titl e lead , with 110 po ints (gross ) to Bradl 's 91. Cardus has 82, and Zeelenberg 71. Had the others not been so excellent , the- first race of the day, the I 25cc G P, would surely have been the best. In this case, there were no less than II bikes going for the lead, chang ing p laces co ns tant ly ~ 8 touch. Cardus had ear lier been complaining abou t fever a nd stomach upset, but seemed to for get his problem s. Zeelenberg, meanwhi le, was . considering his last-lap tacti cs. " But I made a mistake, " he said later. " I led into the Ostkurve and onto the last straigh t, and Cardus could draft past, even tho ugh my bike was better on top speed . I tried to o utbrake him into the stadi um, bu t I wasn 't able to, then I go t seco nd ins tead of first gear a t the Sachskurve. After tha t I gave up." Cardus wa s half-a-secon"d ahead across the lin e, saying: " I think th is is the start o f a co meback." And Cad al o ra was a nothe r 10 seconds adrift , mor e worried abo ut his ph ysical conditio n than a " Ca d a lora Go H o me" banner hanging off the fini shline grandstands - a reference to h is controvers ial elbo wing match with Bradl a week befor e a t Misan o. There was a desp erate battle for fifth , won a t the last gasp by Masahiro Shimizu 's works H onda from top pri vat eer Andy P reinin g 's p rivat e Apri lia, former 125 champ io n Alex Crivi lle (Ma rlboro Co bas H onda ), J och en Sc h m id ( RS Hon da ), a nd Martin Wimmer's new works Lu cky Stri ke Suzu ki . Stefan Pr ein 's HBbacked RS, and Paolo Casoli 's API Yam aha TZ- M were tagged on behind, Po le starter Lo ris Capirossi was ahead at first , then teammmate Fausto Gresini had a tum. Then Adi Stad ler, Dirk Raudies, then Ralph Waldmann again. Hans Spaan was fighting well wit h in the group, and climb ed as high as fo urth more than once, h is lack of to p speed no problem in the slipstreaming battle do minated by Hondas. It was anybody's race - until Gr esini spoi led hi s da y, nOl to mention Spaan's and Stad ler's. On the second-to-la st lap , the Ita lian passed both of them on the way into th e Sachskurve, hut was then cu t off by Capirossi, who hadn' t seen him and was ho lding his normal line. He clipped Gresini's front whe el; th e Itali an was forced to straig hte n up, whi ch pu shed Spaan o utwards , taking Stadler wit h h im. The tri o ran off th e edge of the track and tumbled in the sand trap. " That's racing, " sa id a philosophical Gresin i; while Spaan was eq ua lly sangui ne. " I don 't blam e Gresini," he said. " It' s on e of those th ings." . But Stadl er was enraged, and made no secret of it. Th is gave Waldman n and Ca p iross i up front a bit of breath in g space for the last lap, and the Ger man was ready. "I'd geared my bik e up by 3 mph af ter the warm-up," he said ; "So I was ab le to hold on to the ga p I had ." T o the deligh t a nd adulation of the cro wd, he led the Italian across the line by a q uarter of a secon d. Swiss Honda rid er Heinz Leuthi was third , with Gabrielle Debb ia's' Aprilia fourth, Alex Gram igni 's simi lar bike fifth , with 1.5 secon ds covering the first five, Then came J orge Martin ez's Coba s Honda, Alfred Waibel 's Honda , and Raudies' Honda, just losin g tou ch in the closing stages. Capirossi leads th e tabl e o n 84 poin ts to Gresini's 71 , Wald mann's 56, and injured non-starter Veda o n 55. But on net points, Veda still leads. T he sideca r race was another snorter, with Ral ph Bohnhorst and passen ger Bruno Hiller surprise winners. They had got to the front, pas sing Webster, Michel and Biland, on lap five, and sho rt ly afterwards ran onto the dirt. T his was -to prove crucial, because bot h Webster and Streuer close behind had the ir engines ingest some du st; and though Webster did get back into what loo ked like a comma nding lead , he had a seizure o n lap 10, and was ou t of the race. No w Michel led for a lap, but the German crew were well o n the boil, and led the last four laps, cross ing the lin e a quarte r of. a second ahea d of Michel, who tried everyt hi ng bu t simp ly could n't find a way pas t. The Guedel brothers had been a close th ird , bu t a lso su ffered an engi ne fa ilure o n the last lap, handing the posi tio n to Biland, on ly 2.4 seconds behind the winner. Another eigh t seconds back, Streuer and Peter Essaff prevailed over another close gro up aft er a race of wildly changing fortunes. They had been up to fifth when their engine also nipped up; but it got goi ng again and they rejoined the battle in eighth , at th e back of a tight group. Streuer passed all of th em on the last lap to take an excellent fourth, ahead of Brindley, Abbott, the Egloffs and th e Dixons, with just over a seco nd covering the group. Three -ti me winner Webster retained hi s lead wit h 60 points gross ; Bohnhorst moved up to second on 45, with Biland th ird o n 41, and the Guedels o n 40. Streuer is eigh th o n gr oss points, but fou rt h o n net points, a fte r discarding h is pa ir of non fin i hes. l:l' Resul ts 125cc Q UA LIFYING: I. Lori s Capiro ssi (2:20.304); 2.
