Hall hammers down at Grattan By Larry Lawren ce GRAITAN, MI, MAY19 Team Hammer 's Kurt H all co nti n ued his total co m mand of the Suzuki Na tional Cup races by winning both of the Suzu ki paying A Superstock and B Su perstoc k races a t Gr at tan Raceway. The two Gra ttan wins brings Ha ll' s Suzuki Cup winning strea k to 13 stra ig ht. Hall (who at o ne time held th e trac k record at Gr at tan ) took con tro l of tbe A Supers tock race from th e very beginnin g. Teammates Michael Martin and Britt Turki ngton, a long wi th Ray Yoder, were run ni ng in dose order behind Hall early in the race. Hall and Martin whose bi kes are both built to the limit of Superstock rul es, began 10 pull a way from T u rkin gton wh ose ma ch in e is still relatively stock. Yoder was falling even farther back with transm ission p roblems. In an effort to mak e up fo r his hor sepow er disa d van tage , Tu rking ton was push ing hard th rough the twisty sectio ns o f th e track. T ha t stra tegy was pa ying off, he was right on Martin when sudde n ly he crashed to th e pa vement o n the tight right -ha nd turn rive. Hall put in a string of near perfect laps ge ll i ng into t he 1:26s (un heard of o n a Superstock bik e at Gr attan)"and pulled clear of Marti n. At th e fini sh his mar gin of victory over th e T exan was four seco nds. MA , Y18 Debbie Sawye r fin ished first in th e Amat eur Mo th er 's race at Can yon Raceway MX Park. Four mo thers pa rtici pa ted in the fun event, . and a ll ga ined a new respect for their so ns ' abi lities. Sylvia Pat ern o . came orr th e line int act, while Debbie Sawyer ga ve it her all and loo ped ou t. Kathy Beaver an d Karen G uthrie were more cautious , and rode over th e ga te. Sawyer recovered quickly, and set after Paterno. Sawyer passed Beaver and Guthrie and steadily reeled in Paterno. Sawyer scooted by in a turn and took control of the .lead. Guthrie wen t off th e track while tryi ng to pa ss Beaver, and la ter went down in the wh oops. Gut hrie 's mo tor died, an d sh e dropped o ut of the race. Meanwhile, Beaver passed Paterno, but did not hav e enough time to catch Sawyer. Sawyer took the win, wh ile Beaver stalled o n a hill j ust feet from the fin ish . Pat erno went around for second pla ce. while Beaver recovered in th ird . ).J. Petch ell led th e pa ck of Open Intermedi at es off the line, wit h heavy pre ssure from Scott Freymullen . Frermullen pulled into the lead and left Petch e to deal with Robert Carlin. Carlin passed Petch ell and began to clos e di stan ce o n Freymullen , but los t control in some wh oops. Carlin flipped, and PetcheJI reclaimed second. Petchell crashed on an uph ill , a llowing Carlin and Brian Lewell yn to fin ish second and th ird. respec tively. MOIO two saw Petchell co ntrol the lead pos ition, while Freym ullen finis hed second . Freymu llen's point to tal gave him the overall, ah ead of Petchel l. Jeremy Girior grabbed the holeshot in the first 125cc J unior mo to, followed close ly by Dere k Geist, Keath Co x and Fra nk Paterno. Girior cras hed ear ly on, giving th e lead 10 Geist. Cox go t aro und Geist in a comer bu t crashed. Jim my Kol askis moved into th ird. Cox claimed the wi n with Geist ho ldin g a tigh t seco nd as Mar k Machaj lin stole aro und Kolas kis for third. Paterno nabb ed th e lead in moto two, with Cox hot on hi s trail. Paterno held him orr fo r three laps. but Cox finally reeled Patern o in to tak e the lead . Mea nwh ile. Geist moved past Machajli n. O n the last lap , Pat ern o sto le the lead back, but lost it soo n after when he flipped his bike.
