Buttle blasts Salem Supercross ~ By Peggy Adamic SALEM, OH, MAY 17 Jason Buttle won th e Expert class a t the Western Reserve Motorcycle Club's Salem Supercross. Buttle grabbed th e holeshot in his heat race, and bega n to battle with Shane Smith, Steve Gard ine r and Allen Beech . Buttle and Smith began to pull away from th e pa ck , but Buttle los t co n tro l and went down. Buule rem ounted in last, whi le Maurice motored pa st Sm ith for the lead. Maurice scored th e wi n a head of Sm ith, Beech and Phil Gauthier. . Beech -grabbed th e ho leshot in the fin al , with Sm ith and Bu ttle righ t behind. Buttle quickly displaced Beech and began to pu ll awa y. Sm i th passed Beech a few turns lat er , as did Maurice and Gauthier. Smith tried to reel in Buttle, bUI the Honda rider ma intain ed a nine-second adva ntage over Smith. Buttle scored an easy win ahead of Smi th , Maurice, Bau th ier and Beech. Mike Kati n raced to th e 125 and 250cc B class wins. In th e 125cc hea t race, Katin grabbed th e lead off th e lin e with T im Conti and Rick McGuire in hot pursui t. Tim Boca motored into third, while Conti dr opped fro m th e ra ce. By midrace, Kalin held a sevensecond lead over McGuire with Boca trailing. Katin sco red th e win with a 17 second lead , ahead of Boca , Kochman and Conti. In the IinalvConti chased Katin [ro m start to finish. Boca motored int o third by th e halfway point. Hummel started in seventh place on the inverted star ting lin eu p , and blitzed to th e front of th e pack on the opening lap. Beh ind H um mel, Pat Bennett, Trevor Meagher and Shaw n Wynne began to work their way through th e pack. At th e halfway point, the pack o l riders had moved into the second, th ird an d fourth places, respectively. O n lap Iive, H u mmel still enjoyed a huge lead, but Benneu was closing fast. O n the whi te n ag lap, Bennett had cut H um mel's lead to a single bike-len g th and was breathin g down th e Suzuki rider's neck.
