eLOCAL EVENTS e Chuck Graves (24) led Bruce Tebo (8) and Mike Graves (477) at Willow Springs RR. . George Roeder (66) topped Rusty Rogers (57) at the Memorial D.ay York Half Mile. 16th Mauna Kea 200 Enduro Edsman wins, Z oll zapped at MK200 By Kit Palmer HILa, HI, M Y25·26 A O 24 , a h u 's j oe · Ed sm a n edged o u t fellow islander Ma tt Sweitzer by o ne po int, 15-16, to score hi s second overall win a t the 16th running of the Rock Island Riders' Mauna Kea 200 Enduro, held on the big island of Hawaii. Edsman, wh o last won th e event in 1989, defeated last year's Mauna Kea 200 winner Ron Law son , who was in conte n tion for the overall before drowning out his mount in one of the enduro's many deep waterho les near the end of day two. . Finishing third overa ll, one point behind Sweitzer, was Steve Trinies, while Carl Kaui (22 po in ts) and Troy Stocks (23) rounded out the five overall, respectively. Steve loll, a two-tim e winner of the Mauna Kea 200 Enduro, looked to have hi s third MK200 overa ll win in the bag wh en th e resu lt s were fir st posted ap proxima tely five hours after th e event. loll's scorecard read nine po in ts to Edsma n 's 12, but, a n hour later, club officials decided to pena lize loll 20 po ints for per form ing wh at they said was a n ill egal part change to h is motorcycle during the event, This gave loll a to tal of 29 poi nts , wh ich dro pped the local favorite from first overall to ninth. Clas s winners in the A div isio n included sur fing legend Gerry Lopez (125cc), Carl Kaui (200cc), Edsma n (25Occ) and Schweitzer (500cc). Scoring top hon ors in the B divisio n was Patri ck Rapoza who dropped 28 poi nts , while Dickey Alcuran (45 po in ts) nipped Mike Zane on the tiebreakers for second overa ll. Samua l Van G iesen (47) and Billy Go mes (56) finish ed fourth and fifth , respectively. Makin g a surprise show ing at thi s year's event was two-time Supercross and five-time National MX Champion Rick johnson. johnson, who retired from professio na l motocross racing earlier thi s year becau se of a wrist inj ury, fin ished 15th overa ll and sixth in the ' 250cc class. "1 came over for j o hn DeSot o 's da ug h ter's wedding and he talked me into giving it a try, " j ohnson said. "1 thought it was a lot of fun and I'd like to try it aga in next year." The event kicked off at 6:30 a.m. Satu rday at the Hilo H awaii an H otel in downtown H ilo. After a sho rt ride on pavement, the course led the 130-pl us riders into th e rai n forests for a somewh at short stint on a narrow and muddy trail before reaching a two-track rocky road that led to the first of a number of lava crossings. Hidden after the first lava flow section was the first secret check of th e enduro, that saw just seven riders score a zero, whi ch included top competitors Edsm an, loll, David Hahn, j ohn DeSo to jr. and Schweitzer, john DeSoto Sr., Lopez and j ohnson were among the few who burned the check. Most of the top riders dropped on e or two points here. A few m iles later the second Secret check caugh t a n umber of riders off guard, although 22 riders still managed a zero , including fr ont-runners .Sch weitzer, Zoll, Edsman , Lopez and j ohnson. After th e second chec k th e riders foll owed the trail arou nd and nearly to th e top o f th e 13,796,foot dormant . Mauna Kea volcan o. Only one secret check was used throu gh ou t the approximately two-h our-lon g sectio n, whic h most of the leaders zeroed. However, immedia tely followi ng th is check was a reset, which was preceded by yet another secret check located less than three mil es dow n die trail that caugh t m an y r ide rs na p ping. T his check burn ed more than 30 riders by at least one or two minutes. Included in the burn ca tagory we re DeSoto jr., Sch weitzer, j ohnson and Lawson. Heading the charts after day one were just three riders with zeros: Edsrnan, loll and Mall T orres, Next on th e list with twos were DeSoto jr., Kit Palmer and T rinies, wh ile Ed Cummings, Grant Pa lenske and George Knox were next with three points apiece. Other notables were Lopez, j oh nson, Sweitzer and Mall Lyman with fours, and last year's winner La wson, and local motocrosser Phil Oveland with fives. Eleven riders failed to fini sh the day, including Mauna Kea 200 regulars Dru Brenneman (ign itio n) , David Klein (kickstarter lever) and multi-time MK200 winner j ohn DeSoto Sr. (multiple flat tires). . loll 's Kawasaki KDX200 barel y made it to the im pound after the first day with a badl y broken rear hub . Since club rules strictly forbid the competitors from accep ting an y ou tside assistance, or rep lacing parts that are not carried with the riders themselves , loll ended up swa p p ing rear whee ls with fellow competito r Paul jenson's KDX. (Jenson had injured hi s shoulder Saturday and decided Sunda y morning that he would not cont inue). According to officia ls, this was a perfectly legal move but only if the pa rts swapping took pl ace on the trail, not in the impound area . Zoll, however, swa p p ed wheel s in the im po und and was later z apped with a 2O-Point penalt y, which cost him the overall win. "1 as ked a club official if I could do the work inside the impound and he said yes," said loll, who accep ted the pen alty with out an appeal. "Ap paren tly he was not an officia l officia l. Oh well. It doesn 't really mailer an yway. I know I rode well and th at 's what reall y counts." Most of the first 40 mi les of day two featured the same trail across the lava flow s but in the opposite directi on. The lava [lows section was then followed by approximately 50 mil es oftrail through th e rai n forests, perhaps the tou ghest section of the enduro. A secret ch eck, a " lu nch" check and another secret check in thi s section effectively decided the ou tcome of the entire event. These three checks caugh t almost all of the riders beh ind schedule. loll scored the lowest accumulativ e points at the three checks (three, five and zero points), as Trinies was second fastest with a five, eight and a zero. Edsman also had one of the lowest scores wi th a six , seven and two. Other notable scores were Torres with a 6, 7, 2; Kaui 9, 5, I, Troy Stocks 9, 5, 2; Patrick Gouveia 7, 8, 2; David Stillwell 8, 9, I; Palenske 15, 9, · 0; Lopez 14, 10, 6; johnson 14, 10, 4 a nd Palmer 12, 13, 3. Lawson 's ride came to an end when he wa ter-logged his KT M in a wa ter hole and houred out before reaching the first of the three checks. After approximately 200 miles of trail, the enduro concluded just outside of Hi lo where a ll the fin ishers went through a final tech inspection. All bikes had to have a working head l ight, tailligh t, brakelight and hom, as well as a rear-view mirror and a licen se plate , or would be penalized one po int for each missing or non-worki ng pa rt, In th e highly competitive team division, the Kauai team, o f Ed Cummings, Paul Andrade and Spence Aguiar, scored the win with a total of 100 po ints . The Rad Rid er Dudes (Frank McClure, Car l Kaui a nd Michael Powers) was second wi th 147, wh ile the Maui Boys (Lopez, johnson and Paul Miller) rounded out the top three with 150.
