dispatch the po werful challenge from south o f the b order . Di fferences between the WERA and RACE rules meant that RACE competitors didn 't have to run the bike they qualified with, and that suited Gaynor jus t fine . The Mike Crompton-run Suzuki team have a special ra in bike, the wellused 1989 Du Hamel " RR" machine set up soft with conventional forks, no fresh-air scoops, CV carbs and a well used, "loose" engine. In fact , the GSXR's motor hadn't been rebuilt sin ce Gaynor scored , his fairy tale National debut win with the team, su bbing for DuHamel midway throu gh 1990. Petersen chose to start from the out ide pole pos ition and probably now regrets it , since an excitable Pilon lost the front end in the first turn and swept th em both off the track. Fortunately, none of the 36 riders collected th e ·two pole winners. An a ngry Petersen was quick to remount his ligIltly damaged machine, but his crew signalled him in a few laps la ter when it became appare nt he would n 't collect any points. As Gaynor began to cons tru ct his ead, Picotte moved into second fro m risson, Crevier, McMurter, Clar ke, ney (soon to retire with clutch ouble), Kipp, Dona ld Jacks (strugling wi th flat -slide carb uretors on the alvoline-S uzuki GSX RIIOO) , ichael Taylor and Turkington. O liver had already charged to 12th y the end of lap one: "We had some ignition problems in the morning, and en we deadened out the power, but of nearly enough," explained the iIIow Springs winner. "There just isn't enough weight on the rear . No atter how lit tle you open the th rottle, t just spins u ntil you get up to at least ourth gear." Hindered by a lack of mputer chips, neither of the 500 iders had even tried their machines in th e wet before rain y Sunday at Ilannonville. Tangled up with a 250 ride r in the Iy going, Graves gradually lost all f his crunched fairing, charging to ake time and just missing the WERA ints in 16th. McMurter was off the ck too, eventua lly finishing nin th, re from two ear lier su p port race hes. Hall feIl at high speed on the ack straigh t, aggravating his practice on-crash, near-miss in juries. Crevier aded from third to eigh th but then esponded quickl y to the black flag hen his brand new Kawasaki ZX eveloped an oil leak. Last year's atch Race star Quarterley went ou t n lap four , su fferin g electrical failure o end a lousy weekend for the New nglander. Gaynor 's quick pace didn 't faze ipp, and by lap eight he was finally t the wildly-slidi ng Picotte, drag'ng h is knee in the wet and chipping inio Gaynor's lea d. Kipp scooped most four seconds in four laps, bu t en eased up as Gaynor responded, ailin g back into the clutches of Pi cotte ear th e end. "The bike wasn 't working all that a t at the start, maybe it was' all the ," Kipp explained. " But then it Iy improved, and I got by Picotte d was really coo king. I figured ' for ure he (Pico tte) was going to crash, nd when he got by just before the end, let him go. I guess I was wrong. " ollowin g the race, Kipp's fro nt tire as showin g significant wear. P icotte's team manager, Michel ercier , the now-retired Canadian ham p ion, was pleased wi th his rotege's ride, sayin g that the wild lide style is just the way to handle e rain. Bu t the undoubted star was aynor, th e 26-year-old nabbin g his iggest-ever wi.n.
