~ DIRT TRACK AMA Gl3Dd National Championship/Camel Pro Series: R.ound 3 ~ Georgie Price (64U) and James Hart (16P) finished 1-2 in the Junior National Final. Parker celebrated his 38th National win. just shy of the record 40 won by Springsteen. 8 Natio nal J oining fast-heat winner Pa rk er on the fron t row for th e start of th e Nation al were Moreh ead on th e inside p ol e, Ca rr , Roeder , H erndon a nd Rogers. Row two consisted of Day, Springsteen , Athe rton , Du rell e and Darl ing, while Poovey, J on es and Pegram sat on row three. At th e flas h of th e gree n light, Parker stormed o rr th e line and led Moreh ead , Roed er a nd Rogers into turn one for the first of 20 tim es. Parker wasted Iittle tim e, a nd immedia tely began to establish a command ing lead. Meanwhile, Ath erton stormed up fro m th e seco nd row and began to wo r k towards th e front -runners. Ath erton draft ed pas t hi s teammate Carr, and took over fourth o n lap th ree. Moreh ead and Roeder were next to succu mb to Atherton 's cha rge, as th e White Pigeon , Michigan, nati ve rode th e ins ide lin e th rough tu rns three and four and emerge d in th e ru n ner- up p o sition o n lap five. Roeder trie d to retal iat e o n the next la p , b u t lo st co ntro l a n d fou n d himself on the ground. " I slid off the groove co m ing out in (turn ) three and that was it ," sai d a disappointed, but unhurt Roeder. Meanwhi le, Parker contin ued to lead with a healthy 20 bike length lead. Ath erton mai ntained seco nd , well ahead of Morehead, Carr, Springsteen and Farris. Lap 10 ended with Atherton closing on Parker and cuttin g the cha mpion 's lead to 10 bike lengths. Much to the approval of the crow d, Springsteen too k over fourth when he drafted past Carr go ing into thr ee. T he race from that point on was a foll ow-th e-lead er affair as Parker went on to score an easy win. Atherton foll owed a few seconds back, as did Morehead. " I got a good jump on everyone in the first five laps," said Park er. " I was pushing the front end a bit, and they were catching me a litt le, but I still won and therefore they didn't." T he win, Parker's 38th in Grand Na tional Champion sh ip dirt tra ck events, left him two shy of the record 40 logged by Springsteen. Park er's win mark ed the 74th time tuner Bill Wern er has wren ched a Grand Nat ion al winning bik e. " I felt just great ," sai d a delighted Atherto n. " I moved into second pretty easi ly, and then I could see myself catchi ng Scotty. Then I slipped orr th e groove a coup le of times and said 'Whoa, second's good enough, calm down!' " " I had a little bit of push, but it was nothing that I couldn 't handle," said Morehead. "Scotty and Kevin were just on the gas harder than I was." . When asked if he had to call h is tuner Hank Scott on the phone for hel p with bik e setup like he did at the Sacramen to Mile, Morehead smiled and rep lied, "No, I'm riding my Old Pa int chassis for th e half mil es, and we know what each adjustment will do on this particular bike." After starti ng on th e second row , Springsteen methodicall y passed his competitors and greeted the checkered flag in fourth place. " I was go ing reall y fast, as fast as Scotty, bu t I was back in the pack and he was out fro nt ," said Springsteen , "We did good. though , I' m happy with fourth ." Carr struggled with his motorcycle as tuner Kenny T olb ert had set it up for drier track conditions, and he crossed the fin ish line in fifth p lace. " It just didn't go good for me, tonight , I guess, " said an obviously disappo inted Carr. "The track turned out to be pretty nice. but we made the wro ng tire choice after riding it dry all day." Farris finished in sixth place after working up from a poor start, " I carne from behind, but cou ldn't pass Carr." said Farris. "Sixth ain 't bad though, my motor's finally staying, together and it makes me happy that it fini shed the race." Poov ey turned in a strong ride. stormin g through the field from the last row to finish seventh. " I'm getting more time on th e bike and feeling better each tim e out," said Poovey, referring to his new Texas Harl ey-Da vidson-backed XR750. " I ha ven' t felt that good on a half mile in five yearsl " . After struggling with his motorcycle throughout th e evening, Jones fin - , ished in a disappointing twelfth place. " I rod e the same bike that I won Ascot on last year," said a surprisingly ligh thearted Jones. "We thought the track would be a lot tackier than it was. Our box van broke down on the way hom e from Sacramento and we were only able to bring that one bike out, I think otherwise we would've been Cl'I right in the thi ck of things."
