In th e junior Regi onal TT, J eff An ne n pulled out the sto ps to stag e a n upset win over home cro wd favorite Jeff Russel l. Local are a rid ers Russell , Rick Hen son, Norris a nd Reyno lds topped the co m bined Junior / Expert class in this event , while Pro-Am rid er Brett Landes emerge d victorio us from a wild melee with Tom Sherma n. Norris pu t together a n o utstanding r ide to win th e j u ni o r/ Expert class o ver Del Sch nitzer a nd Mik e Sull ivan . Ryan Ander son rai led the Pro-Am event with lo cal rid er J oel Huskey grabbing seco nd over Brett Landes. While Sm ail subdued the 125cc Expert ra n ks, J ackson hammered the 250cc Experts o n th e ex tensively redesigned co u rse. Noneth eless, th e infa m o u s Sa n d H ill , a murderou sly stee p , whooped-o u t descent, again p rovided the ac tio n show case. H 20 Short Track "T he racin g began ea rly Fr ida y eve ning as Troy Rose and Annen beca me the first transfers in to the co mb ine d Junior a nd Expe rt sho rt track ma in. Ran dy Roose a nd Ch ris Staley made th e mai n via the second heat , as lo ngt ime Boise hotshoes Rick Henso n and Rod Reynol ds did in the th ird hea t. Ru ssell jammed in th e fou rth heat , holding off a ra mpaging Fay to cla im his position in th e fin al wi th No rris com ing up short at the checkers. Norris made u p for th is by winn in g a th rill ing sem i over Speedy Kell a nd Royal Add erson. After a restart , An ne n read th e gree n light perfectl y to lead th e main with Russell , Reyn o ld s, Staley a nd Fa y banging elbo w to elbow th rough the first corner. In short or der Ru ssell , Roo se and Fay m uscled by Annen , wh o now fought off a hu ng ry Hens on. H enson pus hed pa st An n e n a nd ba ttl ed with Fay as Reynol ds dropped back to sixt h a head o f Sta ley. With Ru ssell in fro nt being hassled by Fay, Norris mov ed within striking di stance a t Henson 's rear wheel as th e four riders led the pack. Wi th Russell leading a t the halfway po int , Henson put the mo ve to Fay, a nd th e tw o riders pu lle d severa l lengths a way from Fay a nd Norris. Russell and Henson raced wheel to wheel to the fini sh for first a nd seco nd, whi le Norris and Reynolds forg ed by Fay in th e closin g laps for th ird and fourth. Roose con tro lled sixt h a head o f Kell, Adderson , An nen and Staley. Ryan Anderson a nd Scott McPher so n grabbed the first transfers to th e Pro-Am main . In th e seco nd heat Landes attempted to jam pa st Tom Sherman, but Sherman deni ed him any room to move . As bo th riders made the main , th is ba ttl e set the stage for further ac tio n. Jeff And erson ca me out o n top of the final heat over William Halbert a nd Pau l Lavoi e. In semi acti on, j oel Huskey nai led down first over Ga ry Strode and J eff Walters. Sherman exp loded o ff th e line in th e main a nd q ui ck ly established some breat h ing room over Landes a nd th e rest. T hi s room lasted for severa l la ps until Landes set u p Sherman a nd bla sted into th e lead. J oel Huskey a nd J eff And erson ba ttl ed u nt il Huskey dro p ped o ut wi th a bro ken bik e, which , allowed Strod e to begin lO wo rk o n And erson for th ird. Ha lfway th rough , Rya n And erson rea lly went to work a nd dri lled J eff Anderso n and Strode. Hi s stint in third lasted only shortly, tho ug h, as Strode reta liated the nex t la p. O ut in front Landes and Sherman banged together repea tedly as Sherman fought to slip into the lead. At th e finish , La ndes ca me o u t on top o f Sherman, wi th Strode co n tro lli ng th ird over Ryan Anderso n, J eff Anderson a nd Scott McP herso n . Motocross Dav id Booth contin ued h is dom ina nce o f th e 250cc Intermediate cla ss by wi n ning both rnot os. H is nearest com peti ti on was desert racer Ron Weh r, who topped th e O pen Intermedia te clas s, Darell H aml in and Bill Co ll ins . Rob Roberts took co ntro l of th e 125cc Intermediate cla ss Irom Robb Floth in the second rnoto for th e class vict ory, whil e j ohn Whitman tr iumphed o ver J osh McIntosh and j ason Rich . After track pr eparat ion in the early afternoon, th e 250cc Experts lined up o n th e ceme nt launching pad. Chaun McAlli ster p ulled th e first mot a hole' shot ove r Bri an Cal , J oe Wright, Richi e Reyn olds a nd Danny Fuh rmann. As th ey descended th e Sand Hill , Wri gh t fla sh ed b y Ca ll a nd la tched o n lO McAll ister's rear fender . Ca ll dro p ped back to sixth a head o f Chris Strong , while Wri gh t stor med by McAllis ter a nd into th e lead . By the fourth la p the aggressive mo ves by Larry J ackso n a nd Mike Larson had put them d irect ly o n Wright 's tail. " Joe pulled up alo ngside of me o n th e sta rt a nd his hand leba r just kept co m ing closer a nd closer - Iinall y it too k my elbo w out a nd I fell o ver, " said J ackson o f his first tu rn m isadvent u res, which put him at th e back o f the pack. Now in third, th e relentless J ackso n bom bed by McAll ister a t th e base o f the Sand Hill a nd set his sig hts' on Wri ght. A late -mote a ttem pt by Jackson to p ull by th e Yam aha rider faile d at th e base of the sandwa sh . J ackson dr opped back slig h tly and McAllis ter rai led into second a nd bega n to harrass Wrig ht. McAll ister fo u nd su ccess in th e sa nd wa sh a nd dr illed Wri gh t, pull in g a way o ut of ra nge to win the mo ta. Wr ig h t took seco nd only feet ah ead o f J ackson and Larson, wi th Fuhrm ann contro lling fifth. In th e second 250cc Expert mot a , McAllister also slaved th e field in the spri nt to the first turn. However, this time J ackson did not get one of his ' no rmal starts a nd began to ha m mer on McAllister. Larson held down third in front of Wright and Fuhrmann, and they pulled aw ay from Strong, Darren Spiers a nd David Boo th . The mo mentum of th e vicious McAll ister/ J ackson battle carried them aw ayfrom Lars on, who Il OW a ttem pted lO hold o ff the rampaging Wrigh t and Fu hrman n. Larson was un ab le to contain Wrig h t who , now past Larson, q uic ky reeled Joe Wright (63) posted a second place in the 250cc Expert motocross class. in J ack son a nd McAll ister. With another treme ndo us pass while wail in g do wn the Sand Hill , Wr igh t wrested co n tro l o f second from McAllister. In th e last laps th e fleeting Jackson pulled out of Wr ight's striking distance and won th e overall over Wright, McAllister, La rson and Fuhrm ann. Wright'S day did not end here as he defeated H icks in the first Over 25 Expert m ota and Warren Hickman in th e second to score the overall. The first I25cc Expert mota featured a race-long battle among Larson , Hicks and Smail. The three riders co n tin uous ly pas sed and repassed each other, while Larry jackson lurked in fourth and Derrick Personette and Michael Ol iver fou ght for fifth. With Hicks momentarily in the lead at one point, Smail went for the bigtime stuff on Larson, who ended up backwards in a creek. Larson got going in tim e to save third but could not catch Hicks and Larson. Smail set up Hicks at th e bottom of th e Sand Hill, taking the lead a nd th e mota win. La rso n entered the next mot o with a vengea nce, again pulling th e hol eshot. By th e th ird lap, th ough, Smail ca ught and passed Larson en route to win ni ng the mot a , but he cou ld never shake Larson co m p letely. H icks main tained th ir d, while J ackson con tro lled fou r th . Personette finis hed fifth overa ll topping O liver and Bodie Ba tes. Regional TT Landes roc keted off the start in the Pro- Am mai n with Ryan An derson righ t a t hi s side . Diving into the first corner Landes held o ff An derson , but An derso n a ttacked .and momentaril y looked to be in the lead. La ndes moved over and the n too k over th e lead fo r th e remainder of the race, a nd And erson was the o nly rid er wh o could maintai n hi s bli sterin g pace. But chart had th ird as the riders entered the first corner, but jeff Anderson slipped by a nd withstood Butchart's challenges u nt il the finish. Will iam Halbert , Tom Sherman and Dave Ster ling fought each o the r th ro ugh ou t th e race, but a t the end th ei r fin ishi ng order had not changed. At the flash o f th e green lig ht in the Expert main, Fay m uscled his way in to the lea d' wit h Carr, Norris, Roose, Strong and Kell ru nning fu ll th rottle into th e first turn behind him. Fay p itched his bike sideways and dashed a few lengths ahead . As th ey dove int o th e sweeper from th e dog leg. Norri s wo wed th e ho me crowd as he dr ill ed Ca rr o n th e in side. Bu t a n undau nte d Ca rr retal iat ed almo st .im media tely, " T roy was th e one to beat ," said Ca rr . " He (Norris) made a mi stake and I got by inside of h im."
