eDIRT TRACK e A Ame M National Championship Series: Round I Da vey Durell e (58) and Wink Frei ta s (15Y) chased Ch ris Ca rr (1) in the fi n al. Steve Aselti ne (36) and Chance Darling (84) trailed winner Carr in the third heat, Freitas (l5Y) an d Mike H ale (32) battled in the second heat race. Hale won. four and was the last rider to break the 36-seco nd br ack et abo ard hi s Eak en /Spo nse lle r H onda wi th a 36.973/ 97.368 lap. T aylor ju mped out fron t in the first of fo ur heat races, and won by a large margin over Bryan McDow ell and Dan Ingram. Cory Perraul t stayed close for fo urt h place, ahea d of Will Davis and Rick Hoc king . Frietas and Mik e Hal e arg ued over the lead throug hout the second heat race , but it was Hal e who performed the final dra ft pass to score the win . Frietas settled for second, ahead of J ames Ha rt and Aaro n Hill. J ason Fletcher and Bob McDowell crossed the fini sh line in fift h and six th, respecti veIy. Durelle had hi s way with th e third heat race, while Keith Day and Stephen Beauie repeated ly traded second an d third. Day edged Beatti e for secon d pl ace a t th e checkers, whi le Paul Polhemus held off Mar k Corsetti and T om Troud t for fourth p lace. Scot t Stump got the jump in th e fou rt h heat race, but Carr drafted past and went on to an easy win . Ca na dia n Steve Aseltine wo rked forward and fi n ishe d seco nd, ahead of Chance Dar ling, Stump , Larry Pegr am and Allon McBee. Rick Ho cki ng topped Kris Kiser and Perrau lt in the fi rst semi , whil e Polhem us scored the second semi win over Pegram and Stu mp. Durelle was the fastest off the line a t th e sta rt o f th e 20- la p 600cc Na tional, and led Carr , Taylor and Freitas do wn the front straig h t for the first time. While Durelle cont inued to lead Carr , Freitas dr afted pa st Taylor o n lap four. T aylor returned the favor a few laps later, but o n lap 14 the lead group of Durelle, Carr, T aylor and Freitas saw the red flag when Ingram's motor blew and left a pool of oi l in turn three , At th e single-file restart, Taylor got the jump down the back straigh t and led Carr, Durelle and Freitas. Carr q uic kly draft ed past, but o n the fourth and fina l lap of th e restart, T aylor swoo ped into th e lead as they entered turn th ree. Ca rr tucked in behind T aylor as th ey approached the chec kered flag and p u lled ou t o n ly 100 yards before the finis h line. Five o ut of seven officia ls at the finish line gave th e nod to Carr by j ust inches. After th e Dayton a 600 National was rained o u t i n March , the Fresno Fairground s mi le p layed host [ 0 the fir st points-payi ng seri es ' even t. Alth ou gh the event was marred by a long day o f raci ng that ran well over two ho urs behind schedule, the firstever race a t the downtown Fresn o track was well recieved by the nearl y 6000 spectators on ha nd. The l lO-ride r q ua lifying sessio n began a t2:30 p .m., and allowed junior riders to tim e trial for both the 600cc Nati on al , as wel l as th e Junior National , wi th th e fas tes t j u niors being a llowed to co mpete wi th the experts. T a yl o r p osted th e da y's fa stest qu alify in g lap, a t 36.329-secon d, 99.094 mph, while former expert racer a nd now junio r co m petito r Wink Frietas was second wi th a 36.742/ 97.981 la p, which enabled h im to compete in the 600cc Nati onal, as well as the Jun ior National, whi ch he won go ing away. "I wasn't sure if I had enough for him because he's been so fast all day . But I made my move and I guess I got lucky." An elated Durelle finished in third p lace, ahead of Freitas, McDowell and Aseltine . H al e, Pegram, Da y and Beattie rounded out the top 10. Freitas, who had dropped out of racing for a few years , and Perraul t scored th e wins in th e two Junior heats, and carr ied their mom entum into the Junior final. Perrault grabbed th e ho leshot at th e start of the fin al , and led Freitas, McBee and Po lhemus on th e first lap. By lap four of the IO-Iap final , Freitas had dr afted into th e lead and pulled out to a 10-bike length lead that he would maintain un til th e chec kered flag flew. Perr ault fended off the charges of Polhemus throughout the race, an d held on to second pl ace at the fini sh .
