' T 2 England 625, USA 161 in TransAtlantic team U.S.A. su ffered an embarra ssing defeat in the TransAtlantic Superbike Cha llenge in England on May 5-6. In the six. 15 lap races held at Mallory Park and Brands H atch. the Ameri can roa d race team managed just one topthree finish. a third in the first race at Brands Hatch by Muzzy Kawasaki's ' Scott Russell. The Georgian also emerged as the top American point scorer in seventh pos iti on. The fin al score was 625-161 in favor of the Brits. The biggest individual winner of the weekend was England's Ray Stringer. The Yamaha FZRlooo-mounted rider won all three races at his home track of Mall ory Park and finished the six races with 93 points. At Brands Hatch, Norton's Ron H aslam scored two wins with Loctite Yamaha's Rob McElnea winning the third race. The American effort was hurt by several factors including lack of circuit knowledge, th e short race distances and constant difficulties with the starting procedure. The American team was also depleted with both Commonwealth Honda riders Miguel DuHamel and Rich Amaiz suffering injuries from crashes at Mallory Park. DuHamel suffered bruised kidneys and a hairline fracture in one of his wris ts while Amaiz suffered a severely swollen finger and shoulder. New Zealander Robert Holden, who was drafted into the American squad, crashed in qualifying on Sunday and su ffered a crushed vertebrae. Disappointed team captain Freddie Spencer was only 13th overall with a best individual finish of eigh th: "They know the race tracks ," Spencer said in exp laining the loss. "T he problem started when most of us qualified so far back at Mallory on the third and fourth row and with the grid for each race being determined on the previous result it was hard to move up because that track was so difficult T to pass on." This was the 19th runnin g of the TransAtlantic and the score now stands at 13-6 in favor of the British.
