GIN THE WIND ~ Chris Carr (H -D) beat fast qual ifier Ted Taylor (H -D) by inches to win the Fresn o Mile round of the AMA 600 Nat ion al Ch ampionship Dirt T rack Series at Fresn o, Cal ifornia , May 5. Former Expert class rider Winkie Frietas (W-R) wo n the J u ni o r National at Fresno with Cory Perrault (H- D) finishing seco nd and Paul Polhemus (W-R) taking third. Kurt Nicoll (KT M) scored his second overa ll win of the season at round three of the Worl d Champion sh ip 500cc MX Series in Vissefjarda, Sweden , May 5. Arto Pantilla (Hon) fin ished second overa ll an d Georges J o b e (Hon) was th ird. Nicoll lead s J obe in the sta ndings, 102-81, with Pantilla th ird at 60 points. America n Billy Liles (Kaw) only scored four po ints via a 12th -pl ace fin ish in moto two and dropped into a tie for ni nt h in the point standings. Lil es fin ished 20th in the first moto. America n Trampas Parker (Ho n) won his first-ever 250cc GP wi th 1-4 moto fini shes at round three of the Wor ld Cham pi onsh ip 250cc MX Series in Sch wa nenstad t, Austria, May 5. Round four of the AMA National Championship Enduro Seri es in Un ion, South Carolina, May 5, saw defending cham pion Randy Haw kins (Suz) score a one-point victory over runner-up Jeff Russ e ll (KT M), 57-58. Allen Gravitt (KT M) fini sh ed third, while K u rt Hough (Kaw) and Steve Hatch (Suz) rou nded out the top five. Danny Hamel (KT M) scored the overa ll win in ro und five of the AMA Na tional Cham pi o n sh ip H a r'e & Hound Series at H iko, Nevada, May 5. The ru n ner-up was Larry Roeseier (Kaw) and Garth Sweetland - (Kaw) was third. Ron Naylor (AT K) and Jimmy Lewis (KT M) rounded out th e top five. Tom Kipp, Fabian Cortez and Andy Deatherage led Dut ch m an Racing (Suz) to a narrow 32-second win over Team S u zuki E n d u r anc e (Suz) in round four of the WERA Endurance Championship at Nelson Ledges in Garrettsville, Oh io, on May 4-5. T he Camel Mot orc ycl e Grand Prix of Miami, a round of the AMA Nat ional Cham p ion ship Road Race Series, has been r e schedu led from J uly 13-\4 to November 9-10, th us becoming the final round of the series. Negotiations are being conducted in hopes of ob tai ni ng television coverage in Novem ber. T he uperbike race on the Miam i street course was telecast live by CBS-TV last year. ' T 2 England 625, USA 161 in TransAtlantic team U.S.A. su ffered an embarra ssing defeat in the TransAtlantic Superbike Cha llenge in England on May 5-6. In the six. 15 lap races held at Mallory Park and Brands H atch. the Ameri can roa d race team managed just one topthree finish. a third in the first race at Brands Hatch by Muzzy Kawasaki's ' Scott Russell. The Georgian also emerged as the top American point scorer in seventh pos iti on. The fin al score was 625-161 in favor of the Brits. The biggest individual winner of the weekend was England's Ray Stringer. The Yamaha FZRlooo-mounted rider won all three races at his home track of Mall ory Park and finished the six races with 93 points. At Brands Hatch, Norton's Ron H aslam scored two wins with Loctite Yamaha's Rob McElnea winning the third race. The American effort was hurt by several factors including lack of circuit knowledge, th e short race distances and constant difficulties with the starting procedure. The American team was also depleted with both Commonwealth Honda riders Miguel DuHamel and Rich Amaiz suffering injuries from crashes at Mallory Park. DuHamel suffered bruised kidneys and a hairline fracture in one of his wris ts while Amaiz suffered a severely swollen finger and shoulder. New Zealander Robert Holden, who was drafted into the American squad, crashed in qualifying on Sunday and su ffered a crushed vertebrae. Disappointed team captain Freddie Spencer was only 13th overall with a best individual finish of eigh th: "They know the race tracks ," Spencer said in exp laining the loss. "T he problem started when most of us qualified so far back at Mallory on the third and fourth row and with the grid for each race being determined on the previous result it was hard to move up because that track was so difficult T to pass on." This was the 19th runnin g of the TransAtlantic and the score now stands at 13-6 in favor of the British. "The nurse told me that after I arrived at the hospital, my heart and breathing stopped," sa id Pestana in a phone conversation from his Monterey. California, home.
