VOlCES Letters to the editor
No hostages
INSIDE
Caveat emptor. once
T he repayment of the $21.5 millio n
taken out of the Californ ia OHV fund
back in 1983, as proposed in Assemb ly
Bill 253, as well as Assemb ly Bill 252,
wh ich a ugme nts G reen Sticker Fund
money to keep federal lands open, are
both bills that Ca liforn ia off-roader s
sho u ld str o ngly su pport. Your recent
editorial (March 20 issue) outli ned
these bills for your readers but too k
an unwarranted cheap sho t a t Lee
Chauvet, deputy directo r-OHV Division, California Department of Parks
and Recreation.
Mr. Chauvet's " testi mon y" before
the Assembly Wat er, Par ks and Wildlife Co m m ittee, when the bills were
introduced was not suggesting they be
dropped a s you asserte d. In fact, his
response to the Ch air' s question of " Do
yo u (the department) have a n officia l
positi on? " was "No, we do not. " To
suggest he was taking an y position a t
all a bsent th e governor 's blessin g is
without merit as evidenced by the
above remarks.
To solicit letters of co mplaint be sent
to Go v. Wilson aski ng for the o us ting
of Lee Chau vet, based u pon alleged
sta tements not in evide nce, begs for a
retracti on. Mr. Chauvet has been a
dynamic fo rce for the off-ro ad community a nd hi s contribu tio ns are a
matter of p ublic record. My letter to
the governor, contrary to your p leadin gs, is one of strong endorsemen t as
we need Lee 's de pth of knowledge,
.experience a nd bu reaucratic ski lls to
guide the cu rre nt admi nistra tio n in
Sacramento.
Let 's all su pport AB252 a nd AB253
and not capture any hostages along the
way o il the basis of rumor or mi sstatement of facts.

Each of the mem bers of the Cal ifor n ia En du ro R id ers Associa tio n

of our childre n wh o went chasing off
after their pet dog and go t lost in the
Eldorado Na tional Forest.
After pu ttin g in a tough weekend
of volunteer wor k in su pport of the
deer herd study resea rch project. I
kno w it was no fun to ask your riders
to unload thei r bikes, ge t their ridin g
gea r back o n, a nd hit the trails hard
again for hours tryi ng to find a cou p le
of lost kid s.
Fortunat ely, for all of us, the children were found just before da rkness.
Member s o f the County Sher iff 's
Rescu e Patrol said that the bik es
represented the o n ly real possib ili ty of
finding the kids in the deep woods,
a nd that th ey would be u nli kely to
survi ve a n igh t o f su b- fr eezin g
temperatures.
It 's during eme rgencies lik e these,
when we really have to co unt on each
o ther to make a rea l difference, that
th e r iders co me through in the cl u tch.
They always have! You guys at TBSA
are the best.

Not so threatened
Abo ut th is ti me last year , I wrote in
abou t the dimi nishing race tracks in
Ca lifornia. Perhaps you reme m ber the

ha ppy to say tha t what I' ve seen since
is a growing hope and interest in th e
way of flat tra ck raci ng. I'd like to give
cred it where credit is due, and thank
Mike Brown for his outstanding job
of promoting at Santa Maria Speedway. It was definitel y a sig ht for sor e
eyes. Im agine, the grandstands full by
. the time prac tice was over. That 's what
yo u'd ha ve seen if you were there. It
is certain ly a n in centive to twist th e
th rottle a little harder. It 's a good, fast
race track, professionally run , and I
loo k for ward to returning:
