Flagg for seco nd at the fin ish .

by Mike Mu rray and Doug Fleming. Fle ming
was raci ng an Open bik e for the first time
a nd swa p ped positions ma n y times with
Murray. T hei r ba u le bro ugh t them right up
to Young's rear fender and o n lap three.
Fleming mad e a spectacu la r pass o n th e
downhill. Fleming went fro m th ird to first
and opened a two second adva n tage. Murray
and Young diced wi th eac h o the r for th e
rem ai nd er 01 th e rnot o. Murray got by Yo ung
and held a wheel adva ntage a t the lin ish lin e.
Flem in g, Murra y and Young ran wi th in

seco nd rno to. All th ree rid ers held the lead
at different times, as the slig h test erro r co uld
move the lead er 10 third place. At th e fin ish ,
it was Murray slightly ah ead of Yo ung.
Fleming finis hed a dis tant third.

climbed off th e deck twice and captured top
spot .in th e Han d icap mai n a t the Orange
County Fairgrounds. J oining Hicks in victory
circle was Steve Lucero , anot her former
British Leag uer, who won the Scra tch main .
Hi cks, wh o had a vio lent tangle with Mike
Fari a during the preliminary races, led th e
Handicap ma in lrom th e 40-yard li ne on th e
sta rt as Sha wn M<:Connell a nd Brad O xley
ga ve ear ly cha se. Over the first three circui ts,
the top three riders were never more than th ree
lengt hs a pa rt. McConnell was a ll over H icks,
loo king fo r a way to pass the lead er. T he
fourth lim e they hit turn three , he rod e in
har d o n H icks, who tried to guard the po le.
They arr ived a t th e same spot sim ul ta neo usly
a nd sla mmed together. H icks wen t over the
hi gh side and McConnell rod e over his bike.
Non e of thi s wen t unnoticed by referee Jim
Fishback and he thr ew a red flag and penalized
McConnell.
Ba llered a nd bruised. Hicks was ready for
th e restart . T he race too k ofl with five laps
remaini ng and Hicks was in fron t o n the

way ins ide on lap four. Pfetzin g even tua lly

H icks moved OUl to a big lead o n lap five
and went on 10 an easy victory . Ox ley linished
second, never receivi ng a challenge . Lance
King held third unti l Josh Larse n got by hi m
o n th e final lap. PlelZing also passed King,
but Kin g hoo ked back undern eath 10 linish

In th e Scra lch ma i n , fo rm er Nationa l
Champion Lucero started in ga te two and led
every inch of the wa y. Lucero bea t McCo nnell
to turn o ne, bu t before the first lap was over ,
Faria go t past McConnell and near ly pu lled
a hea d of Lu cero .
Lu cero held a one-leng th lead aboard his
011 Shore/ Shoe i/ Cirello Raci ng Godden over
the fir st two circuits. Just behind him . Faria
a nd McConnell locked int o a nowd-pleasi ng
ball ie. Faria sta yed out by the dirt li ne while
McConnell rode the pipe .
At the wh ite flag, L ucero still o nly led by
a leng th and it stayed like th at th e rest of the
way for hi s first WIn of the season. Faria a nd

Novi ce class. After winning the first moto wi th
ease, Rogers found hi msell behind Brian

attem p ted to jump past Montgomery but lost

Ro gers snuck past Montgomery a few laps
later a nd claimed the overall . Montgomery
