BSUPERC~~mAC~~_wo_~_&n_'~_:R_oon_d_12~~~~~~~~~~ m Jeromy Buehl, who moments earlier won the 125« final, discusses track conditions with Bayle seconds before the 250cc finaL Hometown favorite Damon Bradshaw (11) leads Cooper early in the 250cc feature. Bradshaw (11) grabbed the holeshot but later crashed and dropped out of contention. With Hugh es out of the way , it was clear sai li ng for Buehl and he crossed the finish line first wi th room to spare over Swink. " After I passed H ughes, 1 j us t tried to ride as smooth a nd ca utiously as 1 co uld," said Buehl. " T ha t was th e key to tha t race. It feels rea lly good (to win) ; I'm trying to go out there and have as mu ch Iu n as 1 can." ..It seem s like every ti me 1 get up there so me t h i n g happen s, " said H ughes, who looked at the bright side of things. " But I've been ridi ng better and bett er each race and getting faster and faster. I' m defi n itely co nf ide nt now that 1can bea t everybod y. I' m on ly 18 years o ld so 1 have 10 or 12 years £l' ahead of me... Results brok e a nd th at was the end of my ni ght." T ich enor also rod e a steady race, fin ish ing six th, wh il e Ste p he nson landed seventh . Sommo , th e top placing p rivateer, fin ished eig h th, while Suzuki's Larry Ward and Lamson ro unded out the top 10. Bradshaw fini shed uu. 16 125 Main Even though it had only sp rinkled by the time th e 12-lap 125cc main event go t underwa y, the tra ck had becom e slick and tri cky. Know in g a good start would be extremely important, Buehl powered h is Honda into the lead at th e sta rt of th e fin al, but Kawasaki 's Rya n Hughes wast ed lit tle tim e a nd blew by Buehl by the fourth lap when Buehl landed short over a double jump. "I got a pretty good start and tried to pass everyo ne as soon as 1 co u ld, beca use 1 knew the track was goi ng to ge t slick," said Buehl. " I got into the lead, but o n the same jump where Ryan lat er cras hed, 1 made a li ttl e bobble; 1 went in to the wh oops a nd was in the wrong gear [or the tri pl es. 1 ca;ed o ut and Ryan passed me." Back in third was Ho nda rider H ank Mor ee, who wo uld lat er fall a nd finis h the race 17th. Eventually sett ling into th ird was Swink. It soon t urned into a two-wa y dogfight for the lead, as Hughes a nd Buehl steadily pulled a way from the rest of the pack . Swink still followed in a distant third. As the sprinkle turned into a I igh t ra in , th e track becam e slic ker a nd slicker and was soo n taking its toll o n the rid ers. Around the eig hth lap, it finall y took its toll on leader Hughes. " I came over the double jump right before th e tr iples," sa id Hu gh es . " Everyth ing was going coo l in the race and 1 was riding reall y smooth. Then I ca me a ro und o ne lap a nd the back end just slid out as 1 la unched off a double jump. 1 nos ed into the second jump, so I jumped off m y bike so 1 wou ldn't hurt my wri sts or anything." H ughes a nd his Kawasaki careened off the track, then ha d a diffi cult tim e just getting back into the race. "There was plywood on th e g ro und which lin ed the o utside of the track, it was wet a nd the back whee l just kep t spi nni ng on it a nd it took me forever to get goi ng again." Hugh es eventua lly rejoined the race but was a lap down ; he event ua lly fini shed 11th. "The track was getting real slick," said Buehl, who inherited the lead. " It was raining and 1 was just tryin g to stay ri ght o n Ryan , because 1 knew the re was a pretty good chance tha t he wo uld slide out somewhere. Then 1 came around the corner a nd unfortunately for hi m, he went sideways a nd fell. 1 was th ere and made the pass. " I25 Q UAL I: I. j ason Langfor d (Yam ); 2. Anthon y Paggi o ( K.a w) ;~.
