Vintage Iron 's Rick Doughty topped th e Experts, whi le Bill Ripley smoked the Ama te u rs, a nd T erry Sterrell bested th e Novices. All three B 34 ID th e Prem ier were rid i n g T r iurnph -powe red' mach ines. A new class for 1991 is the +50 division, fo r riders over 50 years of age . Judging by the turnout, th is was a muc h-needed divisi on. Marsh Ru nyo n wo n the Novices on hi s big Harley over Virgi l Eli ngs , and Wayne Sumner took hi s second win of th e day in th e Amateurs. The first special event of the day was a team race, featurin g Iour- man teams com posed of two experts and two ama teurs . Six team s from diffe rent regions compe ted. The experts left the sta rti ng ga te first, foll owed by the ama teurs. The scores from all fou r riders were combi ned to determ ine th e overa ll winners. AMA National Championship Amateur Supercross Series: Round 9 Amateurs invade Florida Suncoast Dome By Kyle Myers ST PETERSBURG, FL, APR. 7 . early 200 riders from II different states trave lled to St. P-etersburg, to compe te in the Florid a Suncoas t Dom e. This was the first time th at a supercross was held in the stadium , and the ama teurs were treated to a safe, bu t challeng ing version of the track that the pros had raced o n the night before. Ezra Lusk proved to be the fastest rider in the 125cc (12· 15) class, as he styled to the main event win. Lusk served noti ce as he roosted away from th e competi tio n in his heat race and transferr ed directl y to the main even t. Vin ny H opper was the fast est off the sta rti ng lin e, and grabbed the early lead in the main event, Lusk, Chris Brown and Scott Bryant chased after H opper. J osh La tina go t stuck in the ga te, bu t quickl y charged into fifth place. Lu sk followed Hopper, waiting for an o pportu ni ty to steal the lead. As they approached a double jump, Lusk pulled alo ngs ide H opper and sai led in to the 'lead_ One lap later, Bro wn also j umped pa st Hopper over the doubl e and set h is sig h ts on Lusk. Brow n close d o n Lusk, but before he cou ld mo unt a serio us challe nge lost control In a turn and parted company wit h his mach ine. Brown remounted in time to main tain second, but would not cha lle nge Lusk again. Bryant and La tina both scoo ted past Hopper, wh o appeared to tire. La tina close d in o n 'Bryant 's rear fender, but couldn' t find hi s way pas t. L usk gr eeted the chec k· ered flag first, ahead of Brown, Bryant, Latina and Hopper , who held onto fifth pla ce. The 250cc A class saw Chris Neal return to racin g after break in g h is collarbo ne earl ier in the year. Neal ripped off the line and led Brown and Alan And rew into the track. Nea l and Bro wn engaged in a heated ba ttle tha t carried them well ahead of the rest of th e fi eld . Alt hough Brown made repeated a llempts 10 pass, Nea l held N on 10 take the main event win. Andrew rode to a lonel y third place fin ish .
