Roeseler moved up to cha lle nge Gerber midway through the loop and the two swapped back and forth for the number one spo t a ll the way to pit row. Roeseler was 'five seconds ahead as he too k the fin al check and a fast'pit put him almost half a minute up as he headed into loop two. ·" We had problems with my gas cap in th e pits in loop one and loo p two," said Gerber. "It's a little thing but it slowed me down." Sweetland was 39 seconds behind the leaders in third overall and Le wis was another 30 seconds back in fourth . KTM 's Greg Searle raced through in fifth, ahead of Honda CR500 pilot Tim Cauby, Vet class leader, Kawasaki KX500 rid ers Paul Ostbo and Paul Krause. and Corky Maughan. wh o were nose to tai l all th e way down pit row. Loop two was a 29-mi le circuit to the north. . AT K's Ra ndy Moseley had brake problems in loop two. as did teammate Chris Crandall, who was for ced to drop out at the end of th e loop. Ostbo's race- long domination of the Over-30 class hit the skids halfway through loop two. " I didn 't know what happened, but it (the bike ) started ru nnin g hot and 1 just babied it for the rest of the loop." said Ost bo. Ostbo " babied " i t into sixth overall at the end of loop two , bu t a broken waterp ump and a blown head gas ket kept him from going on. Roeseler and Gerber went head to head in the early sections of loop two, but the Team Green ace started to pull away as the loop wore on. The tight terrain kept speeds low and the 29-mile second loo p took a lmost an hour to complete. RoeseIer came into the p its with a 42-second lead , but Gerber was pushing for a comeback fro m second. Sweetland was a minute and a half back in third. followed by 250cc pi lots Lewis and KTM 250DIXC-mounted Greg Searle. Ostbo and Maughan. Gerber launched his attack early in the 39-mile last loop but came to grief wit h Roeseler in h is sights. " I was trying to catch up in the last section but 1 slid out about 10 miles into it and hit my head against a tree, " said Gerber after the race. Gerber's crash eased the p ressure on RoeseIer for a few miles but a midloop charge by Sweetland and Lew is soo n had him looking back ov er h is shoulder. "They were starting to catch me so 1 just pinned it," said Roeseler. "The bike was running rea lly ric h up in the mountains. We got u p rea lly high and 1 could hardly gas it but 1 did okay in the lower stuff," While' RoeseIer battled to retain the lead. the lineup was turning over rapidly behind him.
