Nonetheless, the near 300 riders that turned out for the two-day event were greeted with prime racing co nditio ns at Carlsbad a nd a six-mile co urse, which included so me sections of th e regular motocross course, as well as the drag stri p. Even though th e race offered both AMA/ D-37 a n d Southland Racing Association (SRA) points, there was a somewha t smaller-than-expected tumour of riders, as many of California's top off-road rid ers o p ted to co m pete in the San Felipe 250 event that was held o n Saturday. H ow ever, Krau se didn 't let th e conflict ing race dates get th e best of him , as he jumped ou t to an early lead during Sunday's D-37 points-payin g Expert/Intermediate race. T he T eam G reen -backed Kawasa ki KX500 racer was never cha llenged, as he extended his lead to more than two min utes a head of his nearest com petito r Summers, who aced the 250cc class. Fin ishing th ird overall and seco nd Open Expert was Voyer, while ATK's J ohn Rudder scor ed fourth overa ll a nd second 250cc Expert. Ro und ing ou t the to p five was a not her Team Gr een rider Richardson , who also landed th ird in th e 250cc cla ss. In the Amat eur bo ut, 16-year -old J am ie Campbell wh eeli ed down th e drag strip an d charged into the lead. Campbell. riding a Honda CR2 50, q uic kly extended h is lead to a p proxim atel y 20 seconds, scori ng the overa ll wi n a hea d of the first O pen bike rider J am es Gochmansky, wh o was fol lowed across th e fin ish lin e by Rudder , Darryl Bassan i a nd Greg Lu ck. Sandzimier again put his Hon da Brothers Raci ng-prepared CR250 into the lead a' the start of the second moto pursued closely by Mar k Reyes. The two riders separated themselves fro m th ird-pl ace: run ner Lance Messner and engaged in a du el for the lead that lasted for the first half of the race. At the halfway point Saridzi mier bega n to inch away whil e Reyes su ffered from the fat igu e of a lon g moto , Wayne Edmondson closed on thi rd-place rider La nce Messner but coul dn' t ge l close eno ug h pounce. When th e checkered flag waved it was Sandzirnier with back-to-back rnoi o wins over Reyes, Gordon Messner and Milan. Ceaser Galvez was the und isputed kin g of th e 60cc ran ks with a two-mo te stomp .
